Tree Maintenance: 5 Pruning Mistakes to Avoid

11.05.2022 by Girl on Fire // Leave a Comment

Pruning is done for the health of a tree, as it helps to remove dead or dying branches, but that doesn’t mean pruning is safe. It is possible to cause significant damage to a tree while pruning if it’s done wrong, with the potential to kill the tree. When pruning is necessary, use the following information to avoid some of the most common mistakes people make.

Pruning Randomly

Before pruning, make sure there is a plan for what needs to be done. It’s never a good idea to just cut random branches and see how the tree looks at the end. While this can cause the tree to look odd, it can also cause the tree to have difficulty growing. Random pruning often leads to doing too much, doing it at the wrong time, or causing other harm to the tree. Instead, before tree trimming at your business, make sure there is a plan for what to cut.

Pruning at the Wrong Time

Pruning can be done any time of the year, but it’s best to do most of the pruning before spring. Spring is the season when trees grow the most, so pruning during this time isn’t a good idea. It can lead to damage to the tree. Removing dead or dying branches during any season is okay, though, as it can help keep the tree healthy and prevent falling branches that could be dangerous, especially during severe storms. It’s just important to minimize pruning during the growing season to help prevent potential issues.

Pruning Too Much

Trees can suffer from injuries or diseases, and this can happen when they’re pruned. Each cut on the tree leaves it susceptible to diseases, pests, or other issues, and trees can have trouble healing properly if they are cut in too many places at once. Over-pruning is when too many branches are cut from the tree at one time. While this is incredibly dangerous for the tree during the spring, it should be avoided throughout the year, too. Prune smaller amounts at a time and let the tree heal before pruning more branches.

Topping the Tree

If the height of a tree is a concern, many people will attempt to prevent it from growing taller by cutting off the top of the central branch of the tree. This is called tree topping, and it is something that should be avoided. When pruning, don’t cut off the top of the tree or the top of the main branch, as it can cause serious damage to the tree that could result in the tree’s death. If the tree is growing too tall for the space, there may be other options available that should be done with professional assistance.

Using Dull Tools

Dull tools aren’t easy to use, so they can cause more damage to the tree as well as increase the risk of injury for the person doing the pruning. Dull tools aren’t going to slice through the wood and may require more force to work properly. Instead, it’s better to have the tools sharpened properly, so they will work as expected.

Pruning can be necessary and beneficial for trees, but it does need to be done with care. These are just a few of the most common mistakes people make when pruning their trees. For help with pruning, reach out to a professional now.
