5 Creative Ways to Ensure the Whole Family is Reading More

05.10.2017 by Girl on Fire // 1 Comment

Reading is one of the best hobbies in the world. It’s relaxing and it’s educational – yet, we are not reading quite as much as we should be. But there is no excuse to not picking up a book more often. With these five ways, you can ensure the whole family will start reading more.

#1: Follow your heart

First things first: only read and let your kids read books you want to. You can’t force your child to read Beatrice Potter if they don’t want to just as you shouldn’t read books from lists if you don’t feel excited about them. Yes, there are plenty of books out there that are considered classic but if you’re not into them then that’s it. You’ll read more if you focus on finding books you actually want to read.

#2: Have more books on your digital devices

Don’t just focus on reading more physical books – the world has made it easy to read books even on your mobile. Even if you prefer physical books, ensure you also always have books available on all digital devices: tablets and phones. If your kids are feeling bored in the car, tell them to read a book. If you’re stuck in a queue, instead of browsing random social media, just start reading a book.

#3: Participate in book fairs and author meet-ups

Books are much more than just pages full of texts. Think about J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter-series – the world has come to life and people do much more around the books than just read them. One of the best ways to get yourself and, especially, your children excited about books is to show them the world beyond books. How can you do this? Attend your local book fairs with the kids, participate in author meet-ups and take part in events organized by your local library. This shows to you and your kids that reading isn’t just about the books: it’s about meeting people, doing other activities and creating a whole world of your own.

#4: Have more books around you

It might seem a little obvious but it’s true: having more books around the family home will guarantee people read more. If starting is hard, you won’t ever pick up a book and begin reading. But if books are everywhere and there are tons of different books to choose from, the barrier to get started is much lower.

Frugaa.com provides best deals and offers on your favorite book retailers so that you can fill your bookshelves, nightstands and random counters without exceeding your monthly budget. Opt for all kinds of books from illustrated to love stories and thrillers. When you go to the library, don’t just pick one or two but gather a bunch of books. Even if you don’t read them all, you still have more choice around and you might be challenged to finish them all before the deadline!

#5: Set up a reading challenge

Setting goals is a wonderful way of ensuring you don’t skip your reading. Reading challenges can help you have a more focused approach to reading and ensure you actually make time for reading. You can join reading groups yourself and organize a competition for your kids as well.

When you are taking part in a challenge, make sure to track your progress. Just focusing on the end goal might seem too far away or give you too much pressure. But if you break it down to chunks, use stickers to mark the days you’ve managed to read and so on, you’ll feel more accomplished and excited to keep reading.

If you utilize these above 5 ways, you can ensure the whole family will start reading more and you’ll all get to enjoy the benefits of reading.
