Dealing With Mobility in the Home

12.17.2012 by Girl on Fire // 1 Comment

Mobility is never the easiest issue to deal with in the home. When one or more people within the house face such issues, the home can become all the more difficult to navigate and live in; solutions are clearly needed.

The circumstances under which you may find yourself in this situation may vary, but the overall effect is the same. Whether it’s dealing with elderly relatives, such as your parents, or disabled children, there are countless situations where mobility may unfortunately become an issue in the home.

Fortunately, there are solutions that can make any home easier to live in. Whether it’s something simple like a stairlift rental or something more complex like transforming the bathroom, these effective solutions ensure that your home is perfect for anyone, no matter what their needs.

Stairs

When walking and other aspects of mobility become difficult, it only makes sense that the stairs become all the more difficult. To this end, you need a solution that circumvents the physical pressures and strain the stairs can have on the body and muscles.

This is where staircases come in, as the seat allows people to sit comfortable as the motorized chair moves them up and down. These are easily installed and don’t require any alterations to the home, simply sitting on the staircase itself.

Financially, these can be bought or rented. Rental allows you to afford such a lift on a limited income; it’s also highly useful in temporary situations are when you quickly need a lift.

Seating

When getting up and down is an issue, seating is likewise affected. Low seats and sofas, for instance, become a challenge; getting up requires a lot of pressure and strain. A simple choice of new seating, preferably higher up, will make this easier; it’s a basically a case of matching the chair to the specific persons needs.

Furthermore, many of these problems also apply to the bathroom. This is where you may need to invest some money, however. Whilst you can install hand bars and grips for the toilet itself, you may need to install a disabled bath or shower. These are walk-in variants of their standard counterparts, often coming in similar dimensions to ensure an easy swap.

Benefits

Finally, it’s important to remember the actual benefits of all this. The primary advantage is, of course, to make home life less painful for those with mobility issues. This basically makes day to day life easier.

Furthermore, you should also consider the benefits this will have on the respective family member’s freedom and independence. Being able to do everything by yourself is important at any age. This will additionally allow them to integrate with family life better, as they aren’t relying on anyone but themselves.

In summary, this is only a quick look into mobility and how to better adapt it in the home, yet it should hopefully help raise the importance of such solutions, as well as how to practically and effectively carry them out.
