6 Costly Mistakes to Avoid When Moving

02.27.2019 by Girl on Fire // Leave a Comment

Whether you’re moving long distance or just around the corner, it’s important to have a grasp on what moving will actually cost you. Some people don’t factor it in and are then surprised by the amount of money spent to move. What these folks don’t realize is that there are plenty of ways to save money on moving, but they make the mistakes that add up to a small fortune. Whether you’re moving in the future or soon, here are six costly mistakes to avoid when moving, which will help your overall budget.

moving

Mistake #1: Hiring the wrong movers.

Hiring a moving company can actually be pretty cost-effective, especially if you choose a company that offers all the services you need. In fact, there are several free moving services near the Woodland Hills and surrounding areas that will help cut the cost of moving. If you opt for a company that’s expensive or charges you a fee for every little thing, then you’ll be dishing out a small fortune to move. And if you try to do everything yourself, you may find that the time it takes to get it done is time you’re losing money by not working. Be sure to do your research and determine which company would be the right company for you to choose.

Mistake #2: Rushing.

While you may not have a full say in the timeline of your move, putting a rush on it will always make it more expensive. That’s because you need to find a moving company quickly or you need to handle the move yourself without any preparation. If you can help it, always give yourself plenty of time to prepare for the move. This will give you the ability to research different moving companies, source your moving supplies, and make you mentally prepared for everything that’s going to happen.

Mistake #3: Storage.

Planning a move requires a lot of logistics, and if you require any type of storage during the move, this will be an added expense. If possible, try to find a moving company that includes storage for your belongings. If this isn’t possible, do your research to find a storage facility that fits within your budget. You may even want to ask friends or family members if you could store some of your belongings at their homes to help you save too. Just understand there are different storage options you can choose from, so finding those that are within your budget will keep you from overspending.

Mistake #4: Purging everything.

Some people decide to throw things away before the move and then re-buy them when they get to the new place, but this will only add up too. If you’re considering throwing things away like spices or cleaning supplies, you will just be creating more of an expense once you get into the new place. While you should absolutely go through your home and de-clutter before the move, you shouldn’t opt to just throw everything away to reduce the hassle.

Mistake #5: Not de-cluttering.

You acquire a lot of belongings over time, and chances are you have closets, attics, or basements filled with items you don’t really need any more. Before you move, take the time to de-clutter and donate or throw out items you don’t use or need anymore. If you don’t do this, you will be spending time packing up these items just to toss them in storage or throw them away when you get into your new space. Truly determine if there are things you no longer need and then purge them before you start packing.

Mistake #6: Buying moving boxes.

Home improvement stores sell moving boxes so you can safely transport all your belongings during your move, but these boxes are pretty expensive. Instead of spending money on something you will throw away after the move, consider being more thrifty about it:

  • Buy totes: Instead of moving boxes that will tear and break, consider spending the money on totes instead. While this will be more expensive up front, you will be able to keep these totes and use them even after you move, making them more reliable.
  • Find free boxes: Instead of paying for moving boxes, try to find free boxes. Ask neighbors and friends to save boxes for you if they have any, or see if you can take moving boxes off the hands of someone who just moved. In addition, visit local stores and see if you can take their shipment boxes off their hands. All of these options will help you save money.
  • Use your existing items: One of the biggest mistakes people make when moving is not using your existing items as transport. For instance, be sure to fill up dresser drawers, hampers, laundry baskets, suitcases, and the like so you don’t have to pay for boxes or bins.

Moving can be expensive, but using these tips can help you keep the cost down.
