Nickelodeon, I’m Not Happy…

03.23.2011 by Girl on Fire // 32 Comments

Let me begin this by saying that I love iCarly and Miranda Cosgrove.  Yes, I am a fan of a kids show.  I was also a huge fan of Drake and Josh.

So, what’s got me ticked off at Nickelodeon?  Miranda Cosgrove’s new music video called Dancing Crazy. It’s not so much the video as it is the fact that it is being played on Nickelodeon.  It is mixed right in with the kids shows.  I don’t care if it’s on Mtv, or Vh1…my kids don’t watch those channels. Those channels are for adults, therefore the girls are not allowed to watch it…you don’t even want me to get started with the shows on those channels. Ugh, makes me want to vomit!

Anyhow, I do care that it is being played on Nickelodeon though.  Nickelodeon is for children.  Why on earth are the showing a music video of a girl my kids look up to sneaking out of the house to go party?  Am I the only one that thinks this is a bit over the top?

Here’s the video that is being played on Nickelodeon…I would love to know your thoughts!

Brandy – I thought the EXACT same thing! Can’t she dance crazy without sneaking out of her house in the middle of the night?

Apparently the majority thinks it’s over reacting to think this should not be shown on Nickelodeon…lol

It doesn’t show her sneaking out of the house. It shows her leaving a house, out the front door. She’s 19 years old, probably lives on her own. Even if she does live with her parents, at 19 years old, she should have every right to be out of the house at the hours she chooses. I think you’re overreacting. Yes I’m a mom, Yes they watch Nickelodeon and those shows. I would use it as an opportunity to talk with your kids about being responsible while out with their friends.

Actually I think the fact that it shows her faking being asleep and waiting til the clock changed to 11 and her carefully leaving the house that she is sneaking out. My 12 year old watched it and said it was inappropriate for Nickelodeon to play. Even if she is 19, that’s fine for Mtv, but not Nickelodeon. You said “at 19 years old, she should have every right to be out of the house at the hours she chooses.” I totally disagree with that as well. As for my kids, they do know right from wrong….

I agree with you. If she’s 19 and living in my house, she’ll be living by my rules and that wouldn’t include her being out without me knowing about it and first approving of it.

Think you are over reacting about it, it’s a music video, you should trust that your kids know sneaking out of the house in the middle of the night could be bad. But that fact is when that kid become a teen they will sneak out in the middle of that night and they aren’t going to be like, Oh well I saw it on a music mom, so i thought it was ok. No You make the rules and they know you don’t allow it.. So no don’t care if my kids see it. they know they rules.

    oh….the autotune.

Actually, that’s all I have against this vid.
The worst thing its exposing kids to is BAD MUSIC.

I understand not wanting your kids to be influenced by what shenanigans icarly gets into but I think there are wayyyy worse things.
Remember when Miley Cyrus pole danced at that award show? That was pretty bad.
Watching a music video isn’t going to make your kids turn into rebellious tweens, waving their hands in the air in the back seat of cars.
Calm down and let them watch some tv. It won’t rot their brains.

This is just the direction all nick stars go in. Soon icarly up there will probably be in a bikini on the cover of vogue. You kinda have to learn to put up with it, i guess.

I don’t care if she does a spread in playboy…my girls don’t read playboy. The fact is the video is on Nickelodeon, playing between shows. That’s a problem. Also TV does rot brains…

Actually “learning to put up with it” is what is wrong with our society….

Thoren said something to me about this video the other day.. and he’s 12. He said “mom isn’t Icarly only like 15 yrs old and she’s out cruising in cars and hanging out with older guys and coming home when the sun comes up???” And they showed this video on the Nicktoons channel!! I know nickelodeon has several cable channels now and personally this video isn’t even suitable to be played on the TeenNick Channel. I absolutely share in your disappointment.

I am kinda on the fence about this one. if the problem is her sneaking out, you have no claim with the network. Carly and her friends sneak around all the time, including going to the MMA fights. I take offense at the lyrics. . . raging out, going all night, the way we fit together like this, she has no idea where she is going in the middle of the night and doesnt care. . . i only watched half the video and know without a doubt I don’t want my kid to watch it. so, I have the same reaction but for different reasons I guess.

I agree, but usually on the show Carly always shows remorse for things she does wrong. Like I said…the video is fine for Mtv, but not in between kids shows.

I agree with you, and your reply’s to other comments. This is coming from a Mom of 4 teenage daughters. But then again my kids don’t get handed cell phones, they earn them by doing community service. And they have limits on the talking and texting. They get limits on TV time/Internet time. And are forced to get in outside time. I’m such a mean mom. But my oldest I have never once had to tell her to get her homework done (she’s always been weird that way). She’s a go getter top of her class. My other 3 I homeschool (medical reasons) but they to know the schedule work before play. But, man we have some fun when the work is all done.
I really don’t understand how so many say relax and put up with it. And the same are wondering why we have so much crime and other crazy things happening.
I did find an answer though that I liked in the scriptures. Actually it was more of a note, explaining the actions of a few people mentioned in the scriptures. The note read: wrong doing and wickedness does not promote logical thinking.

I think you are awesome! Morgan has a cell phone that she pays for. The only reason she has it is because she actually has a job and needs it. We are very picky about the shows the girls watch and what we allow them to do. For instance, Morgan is sad that she can not have a facebook. Well TOUGH! She get’s mad because her friends have them, but I tell her I’m not her friends parents. So I am that “mean mom” too. Sounds like we have some things in common. The girls are also homeschooled 🙂

They have this “teen nick” thing. But even that has some over the top shows on it. I think it’s one of the main reasons we mostly watch PBS kids. I think that kids TV shows really have gone downhill. You may not think this is a big deal but our little girls look up to “Carly”. What’s to say they wouldn’t think it was OK because “Carly” did it? You can raise your children with the best morals and values but in the end it’s really up to them what choices they make. I feel Nickelodeon needs to go back to kid friendly….12 and under TV. Sneaking out is not acceptable. Nor is stating doing something “whether it’s right or wrong”. The video is cute but I whole-heartedly agree it shouldn’t be on Nickelodeon just because the iCarly show is.

Just a FYI she is NOT 19, she is 17 and will be 18 in May. So she IS a minor who SHOULD NOT be sneaking out of the house.

Although I do let my children watch it, there are plenty of little kids that do only get mentored by the TV. They aren’t as fortunate to have awesome parents like you and me to tell them the difference between entertainment and reality. Should it be in TeenNick, a different version should be.

I will also say, my 3 year old who dances to this song because it comes on during Sponge Bob, has NO idea what any of it means. He knows it has a beat and is about dancing.

THIS: Actually “learning to put up with it” is what is wrong with our society….

is exactly my sentiments Brandy! While I’m sure the video and song was done with the idea of “fun” possibly in mind and I can see TEENS relating to it – I too thought Nick was for kids. Isn’t that their slogan? Maybe I’m wrong. We as a society are putting up with this stuff and letting it slide because everyone is turning a blind eye to it. No kid should be sneaking out of a house and going to dance crazy at a school. Do kids do it. Probably. But we shouldn’t have these lame ass “celebs” condoning it with their horrible songs and music. Yeah my kids know better and yeah I let them listen etc. Yeah music doesn’t make people do things. BUT when do we as a society start setting better examples for our children?

      Yesterday!
If all moms and dads were as awesome as most of you all are, we would have a better society now. So many teens these days think Someone owes them. They do get handed everything and anything they want.
I am with you all, Nicktime should be PG only. The rest can go to MTV

I hadn’t really thought about it because I just now saw the video, but yes- it’s obvious she is sneaking out. I don’t think that’s a good example for the kids watching.
BUT– I think Sam’s attitude and lack of respect on iCarly (and Miranda’s character “Megan”‘s attitude on Drake and Josh) is worse than this video.

Yes, I remember Carly “sneaking out” on the show. The difference being their were consequences for her and her friends’ actions. The video itself makes it appear as if 1 she got away with it and 2 this is acceptable behavior…..raging all night. Children are far more intelligent then many adults choose to give them credit for. They are very impressionable. I stand by my first post. This is not an acceptable video for a children’s television station.

I think it’s completely inappropriate for this to be shown on Nickelodeon. You’re right…that channel is for children and things such as this should be reserved for MTV or VH1.

I’m nearly 32, with 3 children, and the “Rules of the House” still apply to me when I go home for a visit! If I’m under mom & dads roof, no matter my age, I follow their rules. It’s good parenting on their part; respect and courtesy on mine.

wow. y’all are ridiculous, Ive seen many shows on Nickelodeon where the characters sneak out and do a lot worse then dancing at school. Do you think your kids don’t know that kids sneak out sometimes? you can talk to your kids about what is right and wrong, but it is their decision in the end. All you can do is help direct, you’re crazy if you think they wont make their own decisions one day. All you’re doing by keeping them from being exposed is making them curious.

I don’t really think you are overacting. My biggest problem with Nickelodeon playing music videos, that are honestly targeted to teenagers.. who watch the teenage shows on there channel, is that they are showing the music videos from morning to night during children’s cartoons. I have a 5 year old boy who loves to watch spongebob, tuff puppy, and other children’s cartoons on Nick and Nicktoons. We can’t sit through 30 minutes no matter what time of day without seeing at least 2 music videos. I have nothing against music, I love music, but there is age appropriate music for a 5 year old. I don’t feel that some of the videos played are age appropriate. The one that bothered me the most was the “When I’m Kissing You’ song. Truly very age inappropriate for my small child. My point is this, if Nickelodeon wants to show music videos then by all means do it during the teenage shows commercial breaks and not during small children’s cartoons!!!!
