Reasons To Hire A Family Practice Attorney

07.28.2020 by Girl on Fire // Leave a Comment

If you are considering getting a divorce, adopt, or get paternity testing, hiring an experienced family practice lawyer is a really good idea. Here are some reasons why this is the case.

Adoption

Whether you are going through the adoption process with a family you know, an adoption agency, or a foster home, having the experience of an attorney can be very helpful. Cordell & Cordell says that state law can differ when it comes to adoption, so hiring a lawyer who understands the state laws surrounding adoption can be critical to avoid any legal pitfalls.

Where the child is from can also come into play as there may be certain laws from their place of origin that need to be dealt with before a legal adoption can take place.

Divorce

When a couple wants to get divorced, it’s usually much more complicated than deciding who gets the dog. Assets such as cars, houses, retirement accounts, and more must be considered when going through a divorce. The Cordell & Cordell team suggests hiring a family practice attorney to represent each spouse so that each person’s needs and wants are dealt with. This ultimately helps with mediation and typically leads to an arrangement that is best for both parties and their specific needs.

Having a legal agreement that clearly states how marital property is to be split can help to eliminate any unneeded friction when it comes to dividing things up. Agreements like this can reduce stress and can make the divorce happen much more efficiently.

Paternity Tests

For a mother trying to prove paternity in order to get financial support, hiring an experienced attorney is a must. Attorneys can help to force a paternity test via DNA to ensure the mother receives the support she is entitled to. On the flip side, fathers who want to secure a relationship with their child can use the help of an attorney to prove paternity and work out visitation and custody rights.
