Pierced, Properly!

12.09.2011 by Girl on Fire // 6 Comments

Lauren has been discussing getting her ears pierced over the last two months.  I wanted her to be sure.  I wanted her to be prepared.

I don’t allow the girls to get pierced with piercing guns.  We have it done professionally with piercing needles that are hollow with a laser cut edge.  These actually cut the flesh away for the hole.  They do not rip, this leaves a clean cut for a better healing piercing.

To read more about how I feel about piercing please read this post I wrote about the dangers of “piercing guns”.

Piercing properly takes just a little time.  A child needs to be prepared so that they are not scared.  Lauren was getting her first holes and Morgan was getting new holes added.  There is a moment that the needle is through the ear and then the jewelry is pushed through after it.  It’s fairly quick.  There was no flinching, wiggling, crying or even the word ouch.

Please make an informed decision before having your child’s ears pierced.

My oldest had her ears pierced shortly after she turned 11, when she started her first menstrual cycle. The shop we decided on required photo ID, which was a pain, but I felt really good about using a professional who used hollow needles. She was fine. She freaks out every time she gets a vaccination, but afterwards (no freak out whatsoever) she just kind of shrugged. She told me it had pinched a little, but was no worse than getting a vaccination was. She’s really happy with her ears and the decision to get them done the way we did.

My almost 3 year old is already asking for earrings – I agree with taking them to a professional 🙂 I love those little earrings, btw. Cute!

I was just saying tonight that I want to go have my piercings redone with hollow needle. My ear piercings are so tight that I often have trouble getting earrings in (the holes are 25 years old) and hollow needle is the ONLY way to go!
