Whatever time of year it is, the weather can play a huge part in what happens to your home. In summer, it can heat up the home quite a lot, needing fans or air conditioning to cool things down. In winter, it can impact the house temperature again, this time just the other way around. But a cooler house means getting your heating on, as well as other potential problems if you experience freezing temperatures and things like flooding. So if you want to reduce your energy bills, as well as reduce the impact that you have on the planet, then weatherproofing your home is something that is a must. Here are some simple and pretty affordable steps to help you to get your home ready for anything.

Consider Storm Windows
If you live in an area that is likely to get storms and very high winds, then making sure that you have storm windows installed in the right way is going to be a good thing. First of all, make sure any old windows are in good repair. If you are installing storm windows then it can help your home to have an extra layer of protection from the outdoor elements (temperature included). If you need new windows, then looking at fiberglass and composite windows could be a good idea as they are made from a weather-resistant material that can handle tough storm and weather conditions. Making sure that the caulk or sealant around the edges is in-tact and secure is such a good idea too.
Home Insulation
Insulation to your home (usually in the attic space or in the basement) is such a good idea to weatherproof your home. It can be a little bit costly to get installed, but once it is done, it can save you quite a bit of money over time as it will keep the heat in your home, in your home. So for winter especially, it is an amazing extra. It is something that can give you an amazing return on your investment, as without insulation, heating in homes can really escape quite quickly. Plus, if there is ever a disaster or weather that means you can’t leave the home but your power has gone out, it will keep you warmer than a home that isn’t insulated.
Remove Drafts
For windows and doors, drafts can be such a nuisance. They mean that hot air is being let out and cold air is being let in. It can be a good idea to run a lit candle around the edges of windows and doors (carefully, of course). If there is any kind of breeze then the flame will flicker and it will show you where you need to caulk to remove the draft. This can be such a simple thing that can save money long term.
Now is the time of year to be looking at these kinds of thing, as you don’t want to have to spend more on your energy bills than you need to. So what will you be looking to fix first?
