The ABCDE Rule: 5 Early Warning Signs of Malignant Melanoma

07.01.2020 by Girl on Fire // Leave a Comment

Many skin cancers can be caught early on because they are visible on the skin. It is recommended that you receive regular examinations for any new growths, or changes in regular moles is rather important. The majority of moles are harmless, but if you suspect anything, reach out to your primary physician or a dermatologist to get checked out. Below is a closer look at moles and the five early warning signs of malignant melanoma.

Malignant Melanoma

Moles

A regular mole usually is the same color throughout (it can be tan, brown, or black). For more information, check out laserskinsurgery.com to learn about moles and the different aspects to look for if you are worried. The size of a mole is typically smaller than 6 mm (it can be compared to an eraser on top of a pencil). They are either raised or flat, but they don’t change in size or texture over time.

Early Warning Signs

The first sign of melanoma is a new spot on the skin or a change in an existing mole. The ABCDE method can assist you in determining whether the mole is skin cancer or not.

Asymmetry

A mole that can be cancerous has an odd shape to it and is not in the form of a perfect circle. Just because it is irregular in shape does not mean you have skin cancer. However, it does mean that you should be on the lookout for other signs that can lead in one direction or another.

The Border

If the border of the mole is notched, and not smooth, it could be a sign of melanoma. Again, this alone does not mean you will have skin cancer, but it is a reason to take extra precautions and have the mole monitored by a health professional.

The Color

As stated before, healthy moles are a solid color, either brown, black, or tan. If the mole has signs of melanoma, then it will have uneven shading or dark spots. Regardless, it will not be a solid color.

Diameter

If a mole is bigger than the size of a pencil eraser, then it is a good reason to take extra precautions regarding it, especially if other signs are present. Speak with your dermatologist and get a body scan to determine if you have other moles on your body and if they are similar to one another.

Evolving or Elevation

If the spot is changing in its shape, how it feels, and is getting bigger, then you should speak to your doctor sooner than later. Being aware of our body and what it is doing, or what it looks like, is the first step in combating various diseases and illnesses that may come our way.

Other Symptoms

Besides the ABCDE changes in a mole, other symptoms may be present to indicate malignant melanoma. For example, a sore that does not get better can be an indicator. Issues with your vision or a loss of sight can also indicate skin cancer. Finally, changes in the texture, pus, or blood expelled from the mole can also indicate the disease. If you are experiencing any of these, call your doctor for an exam.

When it comes to cancer, early detection is key. Once it is determined, you can proceed with a treatment plan to help rid your body of it. If it is detected early, then the treatment plan will have a greater chance of working well and eliminating the cancerous cells.
