Whether you are still discussing it as parents or are already shopping items for it, it’s no doubt that planning a playroom is always exciting; much more if it’s about converting a basement into such functional space. Just imagine your little ones having their very own space, without them invading just about every room in the house.
Kids are natural explorers. Getting them a playroom not only lessens your chances of tripping over a toy car in the kitchen. It also allows them to experiment, be more curious as they are surrounded by things that facilitate learning. To maximize their experience, here are tips in turning your basement into a kid-friendly playroom.
Basic check-up
Before starting on your project, be sure to have an expert check if the basement is ready. Efficient insulation, an emergency exit, finished ceiling, and leakage-free pipes are among the things that should be taken into account.
Grand and safe entrance
Obviously, you’ll be dealing with a staircase. So, first thing’s first, think about how to get your kids safely into the basement. Install handrails, tighten loose banisters, clear the steps with small items that could cause a misstep, add rubber mats, and even install stairway lighting.
Safety comes first, but also remember that kids enjoy grand entrances. Perhaps have each step in different colors and patterns or maybe add quotes from their favorite book. Be creative in adding those safety features.
Carpeting and wall cushion
Kids, for someone reason, always find themselves bumping on surfaces. Avoid severe injury by putting up floor carpet and wall cushion. Just be mindful though that a basement setting may mean being more prone to flood or moist.
So instead of a wall-to-wall carpet, consider square carpet tiles for easier cleaning—also because kids tend to spill almost anything! Square carpet tiles come in designs that are not limited to being too “kiddy.”
You can choose ones that resemble wood if you don’t want the entire flooring to look like candy, As for the wall, choose interesting colors and designs that fit the overall look of the play room.
Smart storage.
Books, toys, art materials, and other gizmos a-plenty! You’re dealing with a small human being with a lot of things here so be armed with enough storage to accommodate all of them. Maximize every corner in which you can add shelving, invest in organizing baskets and bins, and use seating that doubles as storage.
Child-friendly washroom.
Just as in any functional room in the house, a washroom should be ideally included in the planning. Opt for non-slip tiles for safety and have heavy-duty upflush toilet kit installed. This type of toilet is easy to set up especially in basements due to its flushing mechanism. And because it does not have to follow traditional plumbing requirements, the seat can also be set at a lower, more kid-friendly height.
Strategic adult area.
An adult area is crucial in this room. You can have a little corner to lounge and relax while looking after the tots. Position furniture where you can do your leisure activity like watching TV or reading a book and at the same time keeping an eye on them. For more privacy, you can separate the adult space with a sliding door or drapery panels.
