In a perfect world, your kids would keep their bathroom sparkling clean all of the time, without any reminders or help from you.
As you know, that world is definitely non-existent, at least not in your galaxy. Sure, your kids are expected to hang up their towels, empty their bathroom trash and maybe swish some cleanser in the toilet now and then, but when you poked your head in the bathroom the other day, you realized it could use some major cleaning.
Fortunately, it is more than possible to transform that gross bathroom into something that is clean and attractive — all without breaking the bank or your back.
Replace the shower base
If the shower still has the original base, it may be time to replace it with one that is shiny and new. Over time, even the strongest cleaning chemicals and huge amounts of elbow grease will not get a grungy, old base clean. Replace the shower curtain and liner
Another quick-and-easy maintenance fix for your kids’ bathroom that makes a big impact is to replace the old shower curtain and the liner. The liners can be picked up at many stores for usually just a few dollars and will help keep the water inside the tub during showers. As for the shower curtain, you can purchase one that features a design theme your kids will love; for instance, if they are into sea life, Etsy sells a number of oceanic-themed shower curtains, including one that has pictures of a narwhal and other cool underwater critters. To keep both the curtain and liner looking new, toss both into the washing machine every few weeks.
Harness the power of Dawn and vinegar
If the hard-water stains, built up soap scum and basic grime have transformed the tub and sink into hazmat areas, head to your kitchen for two basic ingredients: Dawn and vinegar. As Fabulessly Frugal notes, combine 12 ounces of heated vinegar — heat it up in the microwave in a glass container and then add 10 ounces of Dawn. Stir gently and then pour the mixture into a spray bottle. Spray down your kids’ tub and sink and then walk away and let the cleaning solution work its magic for at least 45 minutes. When you return, all of that nasty grime should easily wipe away with a sponge — or at the most, with some gentle scrubbing. This cleaning tip is eco-friendly and effective and you won’t have to spend a ton of time on your knees scrubbing the tub and shower.
Pumice the potty
Sometimes, despite routine cleaning, toilets can get a ring around the top of the bowl that looks unattractive and is hard to remove. The next time you are at your local hardware store or a big box home improvement place, buy a toilet and tile cleaning pumice stone. Once dipped into the water in the toilet bowl, the pumice will magically scrape away the ring and other discolorations and make the toilet look brand new and sanitary once again. The pumice does make a squeaking noise when you use it; if this bothers you, put on some headphones with your fave tunes and clean away.
The bathroom will be so clean, your kids won’t recognize it
It’s reassuring that even the grossest kids’ bathroom can be brought back to its original glory with a few basic maintenance tips. By replacing parts that are impossible to clean properly, upgrading the shower curtain and giving everything that is left a deep cleaning, your kids’ bathroom will be an attractive and sanitary room once again.
