Tips for Keeping Your Home Smelling Fresh

06.29.2017 by Girl on Fire // 1 Comment

Keeping Your Home Smelling Fresh

You want to live in a home that smells fresh, but nasty odors can develop over time. If the odors develop slowly enough, you might not even recognize the offensive smell until someone points it out to you. No matter where your home’s bad smells originate, you can find a way to eliminate the odor, so you can enjoy living in a fresh house.

Place Diffusers Throughout the House

Diffusers slowly disseminate fragrant essential oils into the air, so you can enjoy the wonderful smells.

You have several options when shopping for a diffuser. Some plug-in models work like small humidifiers. After you add a mixture of water and essential oils into the diffuser, the device emits steam that adds a slight aroma to your room. It’s a powerful way to eliminate bad odors, but it can also add humidity to your home.

Some of the simplest diffusers just use glass containers and reed sticks. You mix a carrier oil and essential oil into the glass jar, insert the diffuser sticks, and wait for your room’s scent to improve. You can even make your own reed diffuser to save money while freshening your house.

Clean the Kitchen Drain

A lot of nasty things go down your kitchen sink’s drain. If you don’t clean it out, then it will accumulate bad odors that travel throughout the home. The worst smells usually develop after grease moves down the pipe and creates a clog that prevents food debris from reaching the sewer. Once that happens, you might need a professional to remove the clog.

In the meantime, you can prevent grease clogs by emptying grease into old coffee cans, putting greasy leftovers in the trash instead of the garbage disposal, and using paper towels instead of sponges to clean greasy spills. You can also put citrus rinds into your garbage disposal for a quick improvement.

Put Potted Plants in Every Room

Filling your house with potted plants will clean the air and reduce bad odors. You need to choose the right plants to get the best effects, though. Some of the most useful plants for cleaning indoor air include:

  • English ivy
  • Peace lilies
  • Lady palms
  • Boston ferns
  • Snake plants

Let Baking Soda Do the Work for You

When a bad smell lingers for days, you may need to let chemistry clean the air for you. Luckily, you don’t need a degree for this project. Fill a crockpot or slow cooker with a few cups of water, mix in baking soda, and turn the crockpot to its lowest setting. As the baking soda water heats, it will pull unwanted odors from the air. You can also use baking soda to prevent stinky refrigerators and other appliances.

A smelly house can make you dread going home. Follow these four tips, so you can keep your home smelling its best. The next time an unpleasant odor arises, you’ll know how to eliminate the problem, so you can relax in your house without putting a clothespin on your nose.

That is so interesting you say that the simplest diffuser with glass containers and reed sticks can do the trick. I love that idea to use essential oils to make my home smell clean. Lately our home has been so musky and I need something to freshen it up, so I’m not embarrassed when guests come over.
