The First Day of High School

02.25.2013 by Girl on Fire // Leave a Comment

The first day of high school is going to be a tough one for your child, as they’re basically breaking into a whole new environment. You’ll find that it can be tough for kids to get used to life in high school, especially if they don’t know anyone there. If you want to give your child the best chance of fitting in at school, there are a few things that he or she will need:

Bag — Your kid is going to have to haul his books around school, as well as his school supplies. A backpack is the classic bag that high school freshmen bring on their first day, but it may be a good idea to get your child a bag that will make him or her look cool. Why not a satchel, a messenger bag, a laptop bag, or some other bag to help him or her stand out from the crowd — in a good way, of course.

Cell Phone — It’s unthinkable to allow your teen to go to school without a cell phone, and it’s best to give your teen a decent cell phone that they can use for texting. Texting is the “in” thing among the youth of today, and a teenager that doesn’t text with their friends is considered almost a social pariah. An iPhone will be the ideal smart phone for your child, but an Android smart phone or a flip-keyboard phone will be acceptable to your teenager.

yhst-94975210642937_2251_126567071Wallet — It’s important for your teenager to have enough money to pay for the school lunch, their school supplies, and anything else they’ll need while at school. Sending your child to school without money will make them stand out in a bad way, so make sure that they have a bit of money on them. With the right wallet — such as a fashionable Big Skinny wallets — they’ll be able to carry their money around in style.

Laptop or Tablet -- Taking notes is important, but who uses paper and pencil these days? The fashionable teenager always carries around a laptop, a netbook, or a tablet like the iPad or Kindle.  All of the cool kids will have a portable computer or tablet, so it’s worth investing in one for your teenager. Even if it’s not the fastest or newest computer, at least will give the appearance that your kids are cool enough to own their own laptop or tablet.

Clothes — The clothes your teenager wears on their first day of school will be very important, as it will instantly define who they are in the eyes of their fellow high school students. You will not have much influence in what your teen wears, but they will need a completely new wardrobe for this first day in order to look their best. You may not like it, but, as a parent, your job is to make sure that your kids feel comfortable on their first day of school. Just bite the bullet and take them shopping for a good outfit they’ll feel good in as they walk into their new high school.
