Have Parents Failed in Teaching Right from Wrong?

laurenemma47-copy

Sometimes it seems like society has become so degenerate that it gives cause to wonder whether or not parents are doing their duty to teach children right from wrong. Actually, there are times when a parent is lax on this responsibility and other times there are other factors involved. Sometimes it’s peer pressure and other times a lack of morality is a learned phenomenon based on media. Television shows and movies that glorify violent and deviant behavior are the perpetrations of a mindset in others who can’t distinguish right from wrong and when exposed repeatedly to that kind of media, kids begin to emulate that behavior. So is there a solution? There may be, but it probably won’t be easy and it will take a concerted effort of a concerned parent to teach their children appropriate behavior.

A New Way of Seeing the Ten Commandments

Within the past couple of decades, there has been a huge emphasis on removing the Ten Commandments from any public building. Even though the United States was founded on Judeo-Christian principles, the Ten Commandments are thought to be exclusive of other faiths and doctrines and so there has been a growing movement to rid all public buildings and teachings of the morality they seek to teach. However, if you were to closely examine all world doctrines, you’d see that the same principles apply but perhaps not in the same wording but with the same or closely similar meanings.

In all world faiths killing is wrong but each has its own wording and interpretation. Still, the command is the same, “Thou shalt not kill.” To eastern religions, this applies to beasts as well as to man but they, too, are commanded not to kill. So what has gone wrong in a society that there is so much violence, hatred, and killing? Have parents fallen down on the job?

The Hard Truth – Parents Are Ultimately Responsible

The hard truth of the matter is that parents really are ultimately responsible for teaching right from wrong and there are absolutes in all faiths that agree across the board. Murder is one of those absolutes. It is up to the parents to both verbally teach right behavior as well as to model right behaviors for their children to emulate. However, here is where society seems to have it wrong. In early childhood, it is the responsibility of parents to ensure that their children behave well but when those kids have grown into adulthood, and if they’ve had appropriate ‘training,’ then theoretically they should act accordingly. Unfortunately, when they are adults they make their own choices and parents are not always to blame.

What You Can Conclude

A close scrutiny of most world religions and cultures show that people are people with the same sense of morality (for the most part) and will live up to their interpretation of what is right and what is wrong. Whether teaching your children by the Ten Commandments or from Eastern holy books, the lessons should closely resemble one another with very similar ideas as to what is right and what is wrong. By this, you can conclude that there is right and there is wrong and it is up to you as a parent to teach your kids the difference. What they choose to do with it as adults is on them and that’s where society has it wrong. It’s not your fault if they make the wrong choices.
