Teaching Kids to Be Responsible
One of the hardest job as a parent is teaching kids to be responsible. This is one of those parenting jobs that can last a lifetime. In fact, I’m still learning to be responsible. Sometimes I do not think things all of the way through and I make mistakes. But that is what life is, learning.
This article is brought to you by Pley. All opinions are my own.
Work Ethic
One way that I help my kids to be responsible is to have them earn money for the things they want. My oldest daughter has done so well with this. She is smart with her money, she works for what she wants and she is succeeding. She is doing so much better than I have ever done. I am very proud of her. She has a fantastic work ethic and outshines many adults.
She bought her own phone, pays her own phone bill, found and bought her own vehicle and even pays her monthly insurance premium. I am so proud of her.
Taking Care of Possessions
I have noticed that when children work for what they have, they take better care of it. They understand what it takes to get what they want and they will go above and beyond to make sure things they have attained are taken care of. They also think through purchases better when it is their own money they are spending.
Instilling Responsibility in Younger Children
But, how can you work on being responsible with younger children? There are several ways to do this. Some good ones would be to have them work extra chores around the house. Personally, I do not think kids should get an allowance for helping with things like keeping their rooms clean, and helping with other daily chores. I think they should earn money for doing extra jobs.
Another way is to sign up for a program like Pley. This is a toy rental company. New toys will come to your home, the kids can play with them and then you send them back to receive another. They will have to be responsible with the toys, keeping them together, not breaking them and having them sent back so that they can move on to the next exciting new toy. Since it’s constantly changing, they will stay interested in the new “job” of trying out new toys. Let them know if they do not follow the rules by taking care of the toys, then no more new toys will come.
It’s really convenient and helps reduce clutter: Pley packages get delivered to your door and when the kids are done playing, they can return them for a new toy. No more toys sitting unused on shelves!
