I would like to thank New Leaf Energy for sponsoring today’s discussion about teaching children to go green. There is not a day that goes by that I do not think about what the future holds for my children. We are always trying to incorporate ways to teach our children to be conscious of the impact they have on the future. I can think of several easy ways that we make great choices on a daily basis. I’ll share those with you now!
One thing we did was add a drawing/painting app to the ipad. Lauren loves to draw and she could go through paper and art supplies so quickly. Obviously you can not keep everything your child creates right? Some of the stuff she created I would send to friends and family, but honestly, it was a lot of waste, yes beautiful….but still it ended up in the garbage. With the app she can create as much as she wants and with a click of a button she blasts it out to all of my friends and family through the internet. She loves it and her creativity is unlimited! Here is one of her recent drawings…
Another way is using digital books and the library! We read a crazy amount of books. This was another easy way to cut back on consumption. If we want a printed book, well we head to the used bookstore!
Clothing…I have 3 girls! They like to have a lot of clothes! We usually head to the thrift stores first! It’s fun to go and look through all of the clothes and put together great outfits from clothing items that have a ton of life left in them. Heck, we often find items that still have the tags attached!
A HUGE way we have went green was by having our own mini farm. This spring we will be supplying more than 75% of our own food from our very own yard. We have chickens, so there are our eggs. Chicken poop is a great fertilizer and chickens are great at getting things ready for the compost pile. We give the chickens all of our organic discards from preparing our meals. Not only does this help our garden and our chickens…it also cuts down on the waste our family of 5 produces! We also have goats and will be making our own soaps, lotions and cheeses from our sweet pets. OH and we built our chicken coop and goat pens from recycled materials. Free for labor!
We also spend a lot more time outdoors! The lights are off, the tv is off and we are having fun living life! It really is refreshing!
Then there are the other simple daily things such as opening the shades when you wake up, turning off the lights, turning off the water, etc. Little changes go a long way! Teach your kids today for a better tomorrow! What are some ways you are helping your children to be more green?

It’s so awesome that you guys are going to be able to produce that much of your own food! SO. AWESOME. We lived on 15 acres for years and it was all we could do to maintain the land – we were never able to actually produce anything, but I wish we had.
Also, I know what you mean about the kids going through tons of paper – mine go crazy with the paper for drawings.
I really think we can! Then I hope to just go in on a cow for butchering with a friend. That should cut things down a lot!
It really is the little things, like turning off the TV, planting a garden, teaching the kids to turn of the faucet or just turn the flow down while washing hands. I love the drawing app idea for the artists in the family
The drawing app was the best app I ever purchased!
I’m currently working in my office with the blinds open. Although I’m using my electricity to run the computer, there are no lights on. I like natural light much more anyways. Anything to preserve and save…
natural light is always best 🙂
I love your family. Your girls are awesome, and they’re growing up to be beautiful young ladies! <3<3

One of my close friends raises chickens for the eggs. Her children help take care of them. Great real skills and totally green!
Your girls are gorgeous by the way.
Thank you!!! You know, I was afraid (am afraid) of birds. So I was worried how I would do with Chickens, now I absolutely LOVE my chickens!!!
That is amazing how you are growing most of your own food! I miss being able to do that… we now live in a tiny apartment and I can’t even house herbs properly!
Your daughter is very artistic! I need to start doing that with my kid. Mess-free!
The app is called Paper! You can get add-ons for it and it is amazing!!!
Awesome
