MoneyMindedMoms, Suze Orman “Women & Money” Giveaway!

With all the medical bills that roll in pretty much daily I have gotten pretty panicky about money.  Pretty much to the point of just saying screw it and giving up.  That’s not who I want to be though…a person who gives up when the going gets tough.  I watch people like my mom and admire how good she is with her money.

My mom is one of those rare people that has everything under control.  One of those people I strive to be, but the perfectionist in me makes me not follow through.  I figure why bother if I can’t do it all.  When in reality, every small bit of something you do adds up and makes a dent.

Reading Women & Money: Owning the Power to Control Your Destinyby Suze Orman showed me that I am not alone.  A lot of women are sadly just like me.  The panic and just put it aside until it’s snowballed out of control.

In her book she created a list of the 11 things moms can do to increase their financial savvy in 2011:

  1. Stand in your truth
  2. Make finances a family affair
  3. Live below your means but within your needs
  4. Hope for the best, but plan for the worst
  5. Get rid of credit card debt
  6. Save an 8-month emergency fund
  7. Fund your 401k to the match
  8. Fund your Roth IRA to the max
  9. Start a 529 plan for your kids´ college education
  10. Be “happy you did” vs. “wishing you hadn´t”
  11. Never forget people first, then money, then things

She breaks it down for you in tasks.  There is no reason to get overwhelmed.  The book outlines it all where it is very doable.  Even for someone like me!

If you struggle a bit with money I would highly recommend you get the book.  It was a quick read for me (especially with a broken computer!).

Suze also has a website called www.MoneyMindedMoms.com, a site devoted to helping moms make smarter money choices.  With my computer being broken I didn’t get to spend as much time on the site as I wanted to, but I will be making an effort to visit it atleast once a week when I get my computer back.

Membership is free and you will have access to easy to follow advice about things like erasing and managing debt, raising money minded kids and coupons and discounts.  Suze also takes the time to personally respond to questions from members and has even posted video responses before.

My favorite thing about the site are the tools available like a debt eliminator and expense tracker, a coupon savings center, as well as forums for sharing stories and insights with other moms like us.  Plus, every month through May, one lucky member will win 1-on-1 time with Suze through the “Ask Suze” Sweepstakes.

    If only I had started earlier, like you, I would be much better off. but knowing I am in control now, no credit cards, do not buy it unless I can pay cash, makes you think, “Do I really need that?” and most times, you will find, no, you do not. ie, like you learned, why buy a magazine when you can google anything you want to read about? You are on the right track. I am proud of you

    We already started getting our finances in order by paying off our credit card debt. We’re Dave Ramsey fans.

    I’m going to get my finances in order this year by eliminating all ‘want’ spending and trimming the ‘need’ spending as much as possible! I’m also growing a bigger summer veggie garden and eating much more from my own garden and preserved goodies (healthier and cheaper)
    !

    I plan on getting my finances in order this year by putting at least 20% of my paycheck into a savings fund and using more coupons to start saving real big.a
