University is the first taste of true independence for every young adult, which is possibly why it’s also quite terrifying. Thankfully, the university setting is perfectly designed for young adults to adjust to the transition just as much as it is designed for education.
First-year students can have a placement in university accommodation, which is the perfect solution for all young adults moving out of the family home for the first time. You’ll be around people the same age as you who are in the same position, and making friends will be easy and you won’t have to deal with troublesome landlords (at least, for the first year). - Pack What You Need
The halls you live in determine what you need to bring. For instance, if your halls aren’t catered, you will also have to bring cooking utensils. - Figure Out Your Transportation
While you shouldn’t go home every weekend, you do need to have a method of transportation to and from your house. Once you’ve moved in it’s time to get a bearing of your surroundings. The best place to start is your university campus. Either way, you will want to explore your new neighborhood. To make the most of this exploration, go with your fellow students! It’s easy to make friends when everyone is new.
- Socialize
Most of the people that you are friends with during the first few weeks of university aren’t likely to stick around, and that’s okay. Everyone is trying to find their group of people, which is why you need to socialize as much as you can. The more you socialize, the more you can find people who you truly click with. Socializing doesn’t only mean partying, either. Your friends are the ones that will make your university experience memorable.
Starting university is daunting, but only because it’s new. Everyone you meet will either be in the same position as you or understand what you’re going through. Pack what you need, familiarize yourself with the area, and make new friends. Your university life awaits you!
