Spring Cleaning: 7 Decluttering Tips for a Fresh Start

01.26.2022 by Girl on Fire // Leave a Comment

A cluttered home can cause stress, make house cleaning difficult, and lead to an unhealthy atmosphere. Many people live in disorganized homes because they have poor organizational or time-management skills. Some have picked up bad habits over the years.

The good news is that, with a few tips from professional cleaners and organizers, anyone can create a neat, clean home and learn to keep it that way.

1. Begin with a Plan

Decluttering a home filled with years of possessions can seem like such a massive project that it’s easy to get discouraged and give up. Creating a step-by-step plan breaks the job down into more manageable tasks.

Walk through the house and list areas that need to be tackled first. Note required materials like trash bags, cleaning supplies, or boxes. If the job involves tossing large amounts of unusable material, consider renting a Roll Off Dumpster that can be parked in the yard and used to hold trash until it is hauled away.

2. Toss, Donate, or Sell Unwanted Things

Professional organizers recommend sorting clutter into containers to separate items that will be donated, sold, or tossed. According to the online storage marketplace Neighbor, it’s a good idea to get rid of anything that hasn’t been used for months or years.

Cleaning a house can reap cash benefits. Things that you can’t use may be in demand by other people, and it’s easy to sell merchandise on sites like Facebook Marketplace, eBay, or OfferUp.

3. Streamline and Simplify

A decluttering project is ideal for creating simpler, more efficient spaces. Empty areas like pantries and closets and then design a strategy to keep them well-organized.

My Domaine experts recommend creating a sustainable and stylish pantry by storing items in airtight, labeled jars. Jars help to maximize space and create a clean look. It’s also easy to restock contents by shopping in stores’ bulk bins.

4. Use Green Cleaning Methods

Once clutter is removed, it’s essential to clean the house, and green cleaning methods help ensure a fresh start. Wipe down shelves, floors, walls, counters, and appliances with eco-friendly products that are good for the planet. Most also have lovely, fresh scents. Use a HEPA vacuum to remove allergens and other pollutants.

5. Get Creative with Storage

Efficient storage solutions are essential to keeping spaces from getting cluttered, and, with a bit of creativity, it’s possible to find storage in the smallest homes. One key is using vertical space by adding shelves that go up the wall or hanging hooks. Under-cabinet bins can also keep rooms tidy.

6 Tackle the Garage

Clearing out the garage leaves room to park vehicles and can provide overflow storage for household items. Garages are often home to toxic materials like paint, batteries, and chemicals, so removing them creates a safer home.

It’s essential to create a plan to dispose of garage contents safely and responsibly. Then you can reorganize the space to maximize its efficiency.

7. Hire Help If Necessary

If home clutter is too overwhelming or there is no time to do the job, cleaning services can help. Junk removal companies are also an option. They remove unwanted items, haul them away, and donate whatever they can to reduce the amount of waste going to landfills.

Decluttering a home is a great way to reduce stress, create a healthier environment, and make a new start. Cleaning and junk removal services can help if the job is too much. It’s best to start with a plan, get rid of unwanted items, clean, and create new organizational systems.

I’ll Be Saving Money this Holiday Season

I love the Holiday season.  It’s just everything is so dang expensive this time of year.  It’s colder, so there is an increase in the cost of heating, which bites.  I try to just dress everyone warmer and we also have a fireplace that we use often.  It helps, but you know that bill is […]
