When Your Sleeping Styles Differ

02.15.2017 by Girl on Fire // Leave a Comment

With some research showing a shocking 40% of couples sleep in different beds, it’s clear to see that different sleeping styles may have more of an impact on our sleep than we ever realized.

Whilst couples sleeping alone can occur for a variety of different reasons like arguments and other relationship troubles, it’s still high time we identified our sleeping styles to ensure both people get a good night’s sleep. With more statistics showing about 26% of people saying they get a more restful night’s sleep when sleeping alone, here are some top tips to accommodate each other’s sleeping styles if you and your partner find yourself in a tired predicament!

When Your Sleeping Styles Differ: Top Tips for Tired Couples

Take care when buying a mattress

Mattresses can be extremely expensive which is why some couples choose to save some cash and go for a cheaper option, especially if just married and struggling for money. However, mattresses are a classic case of ‘you get what you pay for’ and, as annoying as it may seem, you’re much more likely to get a better-quality mattress (and a better night’s sleep!) if you spend more money.

Do your research and test out some different mattress styles in store if you can. Work out what each one of you prefers and try to find a healthy compromise for you both. Memory foam tends to be a common favorite, so check out this Endy Mattress review for some initial inspiration.

But, if your sleeping styles are polar opposites, try investing in mattress pads which will allow you to customize each side of the bed to suit both preferences.

Go to bed at different times

Perhaps not the most romantic of solutions, but it can be a great way to avoid constant disruption when trying to go to sleep. If your partner is notorious for tossing and turning or is even a ‘space stealer’, try going to bed first and tell your partner not to come to bed until you’ve fallen into a deep sleep.

This won’t work for everyone but, if you’re on the hunt for new bedding specific to your sleep types and need a short-term solution in the meantime, give this a try.

Regularly replace your pillows

Pillows have a huge benefit mattresses don’t: you don’t have to share them with your partner! Unlike a mattress, you and your partner can individually buy pillows that suit your own personal taste and sleeping style. But, it’s important to regularly replace your pillows to ensure optimum comfort at all times – don’t wait until they’re completely flat before getting them switched up.

Sleeping Styles

Everyone is entitled to a good night’s sleep and, unless you choose to for other reasons, you shouldn’t have to sacrifice sleeping in the same bed as your partner just to get a decent 8 hours. But if you follow the above tips and do some mattress research specific to both sleeping styles, you’re almost guaranteed to notice a difference and enjoy sleeping next to each other again.
