I’ve been suffering a lot lately. We are having a lot of rain and while that is great for my garden, it sucks for me. Rainy weather seems to be a major trigger in my pain levels. Right now I have tears as I type this post. I want to just curl up in a hole somewhere and disappear for awhile. But guess what? That’s not an option, I must suck it up.
I went to my Neurologist yesterday to discuss my pain levels. We decided at this time to raise one of my medications by 2 1/2 times my current dose. I raised it last night and I had HOPED it would knock me out cold so that I wouldn’t have to suffer. It did not and I suffered…all…night…long. One medicine has already been raised to the maximum dosage awhile back. I’m not sure where we go next. There was talk of adding another anti depressant into the mix. But I don’t know. All I know is I hate suffering. I hate not being able to participate in much of the life that is happening around me.
When I am in pain I notice a lot of things and think a LOT. Things like being told that I have to wear a seat belt. I think that is BULLSHIT. If I want to wear it, fine, but if I don’t want to wear it I should not have to. The seat belt causes me a great amount of pain. I have to hold it out away from my body. I wonder if there is some sort of medical exemption you can get so that you do not have to wear a seat belt? Surely there are others that suffer from the binding belt that feels like it is cutting through my skin. I feel trapped, I panic and it hurts.
I don’t want to wear my seat belt.

Oh hugs. I can not even imagine the amount of pain you are in. I would hope/think that if wearing a seat belt causes you pain… you shouldn’t do that because wouldn’t it be more distracting while driving? hugs hugs hugs
It is distracting. I’m going to bring it up at my next doctors visit in August. Thanks for the hugs 🙂
I’m so sorry, Brandy. I know it hurts, but we love you and would hate for you to get hurt worse without it. 🙁 I wonder if there is a device that is safe, but allows it to be worn away from your check? Hugs babe. <3
Thanks Lisa. I cope the best I can, but every once in awhile it builds up and I get a little whiny. I know that seat belts save lives, but honestly….when I got in the car accident last year, it was the seat belt and air bag that sent me to the hospital. I can handle the lap part, but I have to have it loose….the part that goes across my chest…ugh…it is miserable.
I’m sorry that you are in pain. I am sending hugs your way!
Virtual hugs are the best 🙂 Thanks!
I am so sorry you are in so much pain! I’d ask your doctor to see if there is a medical expemption!
I have it written down on my list for my August appointment. I have to write everything down or I forget. Another thing we are going to talk about is a handicap tag for me. I wouldn’t need it all of the time, but there are sometimes I really do need it.
HUGS! I am so sorry you are in so much pain. 🙁 I hope they can manage it soon.
Thank you! I’ve stayed away from pain pills, so the pain will always be there. I am always researching natural ways to help myself have a better quality of life.
I have RA but am finally learning to manage my pain. However I visit a pain specialist and have gotten to know a woman with a neurological disorder (I don’t know what it is) and she’s in constant pain. She said there are some nights she can’t even stand to have so much as a lightweight sheet on top of her because the pain response in her nerve endings is excruciating. I just can’t even imagine that kind of pain. She doesn’t wear her seat belt and she told me that she has been pulled over at checkpoints (we have checkpoints for almost everything here in NY!) and they didn’t cite her because she had a note from her physician.
I hate the thought of ANYONE not wearing their seat belt because the “what ifs” are horrible, and especially in your case, you’re damned if you do, and potentially damned if you don’t. While I think you might want to look into state regs regarding medical conditions that negate the use of a seat belt, I’m also wondering if there isn’t something you can get that goes between you and the belt that takes away some of the pain?
I’m so sorry you’re going through this. Sending love and prayers. Lots of them.
I wonder if she has what I have? It does sound like it. If I had a better body I would be a nudist hahaha…clothing hurts, sound hurts….everything hurts. I manage the best I can, this was a whiny moment for me. I tend to have them when the weather is bad and my pain levels rise.
Is it illegal to but the cross part of the seat belt behind you? I always assumed it was. I need to check into the laws.
Oh gosh I’m so sorry you are in such pain! Are there any adaptive devices to help with seatbelts?
I’m not sure. I know there have to be many people that can not stand it or can not use it. I need to do some research now that I can think straight 🙂
Oh, sweetheart. I’m so sorry.
Thanks girl, I had a weak moment.
I feel for you!
However, I personally am grateful to the seat belt rule because it saved my life. I do have a broken middle left finger and a right ankle with screws in it, and when it rains I suffer like crazy with pain too. They do make gadgets that you can use to hold them in place though. I can’t remember what they are called for the life of me right now.
I hope that you gain some relief soon!! It’s miserable to be in so much pain that you can’t live. My husband is in a very similar position too.
Sadly the seat belt and air bag are what injured me in a car accident last year and caused more permanent pain with my RSD. 🙁 I do know that they save many life’s, but there has to be an exception for those that it causes pain to.
I’m so sorry to hear that. I can see why you have a dislike then for them! There are many people who don’t like them at all for various reasons.
It makes me sad that you are in so much pain. I totally get the seatbelt thing. Mine hits a spot on my collar bone that makes it hurt. It’s nowhere near the pain you endure, but I can definitely see how the seatbelt could increase your pain.
I hope you can find a solution and still be safe at the same time.
Oh yea, I am sure anyone that is sensitive has an issue with it. You would think they could come up with a better design that is more comfortable to most people. Thanks Kim 🙂
I really hate that you are in so much pain. And that seat belts make it worse. I hope your doctor finds a better solution for your pain, and fast!
Thanks Sarah 🙂 Right now I am still in pain med refusal. I don’t want to become dependent on them at this stage. I know later I may have no choice but to accept the pain meds. Right now I take neuro meds that help turn the volume down a bit. I am also researching more natural ways to treat the pain.
I know from long distance traveling that a seatbelt can get uncomfortable but I cannot imagine how difficult it would be if I had that feeling every single time I got in the car. I feel for you!
Thank you Nicole 🙂 My whiny moment…lol
I have this fuzzy thing that fits over the seat belt strap and prevents it from feeling like it’s chafing me or cutting me. That helps a lot. I wonder if it would help you?
It wouldn’t help 🙁
Sorry you are in so much pain! Is there no way to get a doctor’s note?
Thanks Marisa. I’m going to be talking to my neuro about this and a few other things when I go back in August. 🙂
I was also wondering if a wool fleece cover might help make it a little more bearable.
I wish that something like that could help, but it won’t. Now I have to go check out your Cheddar Onion Hash Brown Cups…sounds delish!!!!
Seatbelts save lives. Not just your own. when you are unbelted in a car accident situation you are thrown around the car and unable to gain control properly. Maybe you’ll live maybe you will not…but the car(s) you come in contact with while out of control will likely get more damage if you are unbelted. Maybe you’ll kill someone else. Booz helps my pain but you won’t see me getting into a car and driving after drinking. Driving is a privlege not a right. That is why they can take away your licence. So they get to make the rules. You can choose not to drive. Also I suggest you take a look at one of those car buddies for kids and get someone to make a modified one that will hold the seat belt out from you body that might help.
I had a student who had his seat belt on in an accident and thought that was OK and that his buddy did not need one as he was not driving. Come accident time-(not his fault) the other occupant flew around the front seat knocking his arm and causing the driver to loose control. Both died and so did a little girl in one of the cars that they came into contact with.
Lets not forget my two favorite ways to die without a belt to hold you in. My seven year old cousin was on her mothers lap in the front seat (before madatory belts) they got hit by some anciet old fogie without his glasses that had shrunk so much he could barely see over the dash board. My cousins head when out the front glass of the car then back in. Out doesn’t do so much damage it’s the coming back in…Her mother went to pick her up only to find that the back of her head was missing.
Some might think she’d been Ok if she went out and was thrown clear but hounestly she would have been more likely killed by what I call terminal road rash. They spin almost like a rotissary and are skinned alive amoung other things.
I have seen countless accidents- never saw someone belted die. I’m not saying it doesn’t happen but the chances of belt or not …I’d choose belt or give up driving if it’s that bad.
First I was a driving Instructor, Parametic, later a driving examiner, then a trainer, I hold a class ABM with zed endorcement (Ontario) licence. I taught inclass for seniors and new drivers with the ministry of transportation. I also am a regular guest speaker for women into non traditional trades regarding going into truck driving.
Simply speaking I know what I am talking about with regard to seatbelts. If you think it’s up to you becasue of your pain to not wear a seatbelt your wrong. You have a responsibility toward others you may come in contact with. Plus frankly you seem a decent person on the end of your rope…but even it it was “just you” you were responsible for your still wrong because you have lots of people who care about you friends, family , co-workers, etc..you have a responsiblility to them to keep yourself safe.
