Last night was a complete success for someone like me. After the car accident I had to take some time off of CTH (Crash Test Hunnies) Derby Practice. The CRPS (RSD) flare was so bad that I could not wear the elbow pads that are required for practice. So I went since mid March without attending practice. Then yesterday I completely sucked it up and said to myself… Here’s the deal. You are going to go to practice. You are going to put your full gear and skates on. You are going to skate, even if it’s only a few minutes. So I did.

Those first few minutes quickly turned into 30 min and I was still out there. That 30 min turned in to 2 hours. 2 full hours of practice. I did it. Did it suck? Yes. Did it hurt? Hell Yes! Did I do things that I was told I would never be able to do? Yep! Seriously, screw you CRPS. I even skated backwards. I didn’t master it, but I did it and I didn’t fall which is huge since my balance is so out of whack. I also attempted to skate 27 laps in 5 min, which is a requirement you have to meet later on. These 27 laps were done at the end of practice. I skated EVERY single one of those 27 laps. I did not make it in 5 min, I made in 6 min and some odd seconds. I had one fall because I tripped over a wheel when someone else fell. I didn’t want to get back up. I really didn’t. But I had people telling me I could do it and that made a huge difference. I got up and I did it. Maybe next time I can make it in 5 min, maybe next time I only actually skate for 5 min. It’s ok though. As long as I try.
I woke up this morning and was able to get out of bed much quicker than normal. Usually it takes me a good 5-10 min to physically go from a laying down position to standing. Today I did not have that issue. Exercise does help. My pain is not gone, but today is what I refer to as my good day.
Having such supportive people around me has been fantastic! Everyone has their battles. They may be very different, but we all have a battle. Just find a place where you can be surrounded by fantastic people that tell you what you can do, not what you can’t. Thank you North Texas Derby Revolution!
