Have you watched Saving Mr. Banks yet? If not, I have to recommend that you do as soon as you can! I went into Walt Disney’s private screening room while I was in California. I went in expecting to see a movie, I didn’t expect to boohoo like a baby! The movie was way more than I had imagined it would be.
As a kid, Mary Poppins was one of my favorite movies. It was so magical! As an adult, learning the story behind the the story and the struggle to get the movie made changed my feeling as an adult about how I see this movie. It changed them for the better, how is that even possible? I love it even more!
I would have to say that Saving Mr. Banks is a movie for adults and older kids. I honestly could not see my younger girls watching it and understanding it. Now, my teenager would totally get it and I think it will be great for her to watch.
The quest for Mary Poppins as a movie started when Walt Disney’s daughters asked him to make a movie about P.L. Travers’, Mary Poppins. He did what a lot of us parents do…he promised! He bit out off a lot with that promise. He worked for 20 years to obtain the rights. The author didn’t want her Mary Poppins (never just Mary!) being turned into a kids Disney movie. Mary Poppins was more important to her than anyone could have ever imagine. Walt had to really work and figure out what she needed to see Mary come to life. You’ll have to watch the movie to understand.
As I watched the movie with my friends from the blogging world, I saw everyone dabbing tears on more than a few occasions. The movie truly touched our hearts in more than one way. Mary Poppins is different to me now, it’s more important.
I loved being able to see how the songs and the film came together. There are a lot of great moments in Saving Mr. Banks.
Be sure to stay through the credits…if you have any doubts that she was really like that..those will diminish once you hear the actual recordings of her talking. She insisted that all of the meetings were recorded. I loved this movie so much and would have to say it is one of my favorites from this year!
I learned that Saving Mr. Banks is the first feature-length, theatrical drama to depict Walt Disney. Fun fact… P.L. Travers’ father was a banker and is the basis for Mr. Banks in Mary Poppins!
