Here’s How I’m Still Saving Money Every Day

Here’s How I’m Still Saving Money Every Day

I’ve already posted one or two articles about how I do my best to save money in every area of my life. You could say it has been a mission of mine for the last few years to get more bang for my buck. We all struggle to improve our income each year, but if we’re not frugal, that extra cash is just going to leak away. So how far have I come, and how have I kept it going?

It’s all really about lifestyle changes. And it’s taken a few changes in the way I think about things too. I have a busy family home just like all of you. The kids know how important it is to us as a family to live within our means and be careful with our spend. They understand that to have enough of what we need, there are times when we can’t have the luxuries we desire.

They’re also pretty good at making sure lights are switched off, and none of the taps are left dripping or running on. And we’re sensible with food. We eat by portions to make sure we have enough of what we need, rather than overeating. And we have treats and desserts when they’re on offer or home made. We’ve even taken to growing some of our own at times too.

Coupons are hugely popular in my household now. We know that every few cents off makes a difference. It was a great math project in the early days to keep a running total of how much we’ve saved. The bigger the number got by the end of the first year, the more excited the kids were about it (me too). If nothing else, it helped the kids learn about percentages and addition!

Whenever I’m making a purchase decision, I always read reviews. I need to know I’m not wasting my money. I check that the reviews say the product is high quality, and that it will do what I need it to do. I also find out if other products would be a better buy. This all goes a long way to avoiding a bad purchase. I don’t have the money to waste it on products that don’t make our lives better.

I continue to avoid debts and borrowing wherever I can. You can’t really get through life without taking out a loan once or twice. But if I can wait those few weeks or months it takes to save, I’m saving a fortune on interest repayments. It also means I’m living by budgets all the time. I know what we need, and that’s the amount we strive to earn each month. Anything over that can go in the savings pot for a really great vacation!

I guess our lives are about avoiding waste, and not getting greedy. Of course, there are times when I can’t help but buy on impulse. But we try our best to be good with our money. And it works!
