I’m tired. My body is getting worse and I have a hard time getting around to work. I’m ready to retire, but you know what? I am no where near ready for retirement! I haven’t planned, prepared…I’ve done nothing! I looked to Genworth for some information on retirement.
I read an article that said there were 12 important retirement planning deadlines that I can’t miss. Deadlines? That sounds scary! Was I too late? Past my prime? Am I doomed? NO, I’m not doomed, those deadlines are not yet here, but now is the time to start figuring it out. Better than late than never? I learned that if I don’t make the cut offs, I could face higher taxes, penalties and fees. Like I need that!
So, workersbecome eligible for Social Security at age 62. But you don’t want to sign up at this age because your payments will be permanently reduced by as much as 30 percent! I’m easily confused by this sort of thing, but from what I understand if you wait until age 67 you can collect the full payments and avoid the earnings limit. 67 is is still a long way off and I know that things will be different for me. I will be collecting social security/disability long before that. The way things are going, I’ll be lucky if I am able to walk with a walker at that age! You can even better your situation if you can put it off until age 70! If you can wait til then, your payments will increase by 8 percent per year up until age 70.
It’s a lot to read and think about, but thankfully the information is out there and available so that we all can make informed decisions about retirement. I worry about us being self employed.
Are you ready for retirement? Do you work for yourself? What is your plan? Are you like me and learning as you go? Honestly I feel lost with my financial planning in general, let alone the future and retirement. I am not afraid to say that I am a bit scared. I can say that I have really been thinking a lot lately! Now just need to take the steps.
