Repelling Rabbits: Avoiding Voracious Appetites in Your Vegetable Garden

04.26.2016 by Girl on Fire // Leave a Comment

Repelling Rabbits

Rabbits may be cute and cuddly, but when they start causing damage in your garden, they quickly turn into a pest that you must get rid of. So how do you go about doing that? Here is a guide to the damage that rabbits can cause and some information on how you can prevent them from becoming a problem in your garden.

What Damage Do Rabbits Cause?

Rabbits can be a problem whether you live in rural or urban areas. Cottontail rabbits are the most common, but while many people enjoy seeing wild rabbits in the garden, if you are growing vegetables they can quickly become a problem and start to cause damage to trees and shrubs.

Not only will rabbits eat your vegetables, but they can also cause serious damage to shrubs and new trees. Hungry rabbits can cause a lot of damage to anything that is edible, and the only way to stop them is to prevent them from accessing the vegetation, or to get rid of them completely.

How to Control a Rabbit Problem

If you do not want to cause any harm to the rabbits, but you still want them to stay away from your garden, the first option to consider is prevention in the form of a sturdy fence. You will need to dig the fence deep into the ground to at least 10 inches, and you can use chicken wire to prevent them from getting in underneath.

The fence must also be high enough to prevent rabbits from jumping over it. And you will also have to decide whether to fence off a whole area, or just the trees and plants you want to protect. Fencing the whole garden will be a larger and most costly job, but it may be the best solution.

Another option if you don’t want to hurt the rabbits is to set live traps. These are especially good if you have children or pets because they are safer to place around the garden. Once you catch the rabbits in the live traps, you can set them free somewhere else.

If you are not concerned about harming the rabbits, then you can set lethal traps instead. These can be effective, but you will have to find out about the laws surrounding the practice. You will also have to consider the potential harm you might cause to other animals in your garden.

Some people shoot rabbits that are a problem in the garden, so this may be another option. Again, you will have to find out whether there are any laws surrounding this in your area.

Alternatively, you could hire an expert to sort out the problem for you. A specialist in pest control may also be able to sort out a rabbit problem for you. Experts in termite control in New Orleans will often be able to deal with rabbits as well, so find a professional who can sort out the problem for good.

Prevent Rabbits from Becoming a Problem

Prevention is the best method for preventing damage by rabbits, so consider setting up a fence around your yard. You may also want to simply make your lawn less attractive for rabbits by getting rid of large bushes and debris that they can hide in so they will feel less safe. However you go about it, don’t let rabbits spoil your lovely garden this summer, and follow these tips to prevent them becoming a problem.
