Full Week of Shelter Dog Adoption Episodes. Begins Monday, October 3, 2011, on PBS KIDS (check local listings)
(Boston, MA, Monday, September 19, 2011) ?PBS KIDS? television series Martha Speaks is teaming up with The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) to support National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week, November 6-12, 2011. To celebrate, Martha Speaks will feature a special week of shelter and dog care themed programs, including a brand-new episode premiering Monday, October 3, on PBS KIDS (check local listings).
?Pet adoption is very important to Martha and her friends,? says Senior Executive Producer Carol Greenwald. ?As an adopted pet, Martha gives children a dog?s-eye view of animal shelters. She also teaches families how to properly care for their new furry family members once they?ve been adopted.?
A Meaningful Partnership for Author Susan Meddaugh
The real-life Martha, who inspired the popular children?s book series, was a stray, so for Martha Speaks author Susan Meddaugh, helping shelter animals is a cause that is near and dear to her heart. ?Martha has taken me on an incredible ride. She has given me far more than I could ever have imagined ? including the adoption of five more dogs over the years,? says Meddaugh. ?If we hadn’t adopted Martha, we would have missed so much. It makes me sad to think of all the dogs in shelters, and all the love and surprises they could bring to a forever home of their own.?
Resources and Opportunities for Families
Martha Speaks is supporting The Humane Society of the United States with community engagement activities through PBS stations across the country and online resources for families. On the Parents and Teachers section of the Martha Speaks website, families can find resources and information about supporting animal shelters, understanding and caring for pets, and responsible pet adoption in a new Helping Animals section at http://www.pbs.org/parents/martha/helpinganimals/index.html. Families also can view tip sheets on dog behavior and breeds, dog-themed activities and crafts, and ideas for holding their own shelter drives.
?When looking to add a pet to the family, your local animal shelter or rescue group is the best place to turn,? says Betsy McFarland, vice president of Companion Animals for The Humane Society of the United States. ?The Humane Society of the United States is proud to work with Martha Speaks to increase awareness of the many wonderful pets waiting for new homes at shelters and rescue groups across the country. We hope that more families will take this message to heard and save a life by choosing to adopt their next pet.?
Families that have already adopted a shelter animal are invited to share their photos and stories on the Martha Speaks Facebook Fan page.

About Martha Speaks
The underlying goal of MARTHA SPEAKS is to help increase children?s oral vocabulary ? and how better to get kids excited about learning new words than with a dog who just can’t stop talking? Throughout the series, Martha teaches young children vocabulary words like imaginative, splurge, experiment, and more. Martha?s antics also continue online at http://www.PBSKIDS.org/martha, a comprehensive website that builds on the series? curriculum to bolster the oral vocabulary of four- to seven-year-olds, and on the critically acclaimed iPhone app, ?Martha?s Dog Party,? which has been shown to raise a child?s vocabulary by as much as 31 percent.
