Whether you’re going for a hike in your local forest or climbing a mountain on the opposite side of the world, your outdoor outfit matters. Choose the wrong clothes to wear, and your experience will be an uncomfortable one. Here’s how to stay happy and dry when adventuring out into the Great Outdoors.
Fix up your footwear
For a walk in the woods, a pair of wellies may be all you need. However, for a long and grueling hike, a professional pair of hiking boots can be worth investing in. Under Armour do some affordable but reliable boot options. For adventuring outdoors in the heat, it’s possible to buy a pair of hiking sandals. These offer a thick sole and grip for tackling the tough terrain underfoot, whilst keeping your feet well ventilated.
Layering up
Don’t be afraid of layering up when going outdoors – wear too much and you can always take garments off, whereas if you wear too little, you won’t have the option to then put on extra layers. There are lots of thermal materials out there that are also light so that you can carry them around easy (either in a rucksack or around your waist) when not wearing them.
Staying dry
Hiking outdoors in the rain is no fun if you’re not wearing waterproof clothing. A waterproof jacket as supplied by the likes of Berghaus can be worth buying to stay dry. For skiing and other winter activities, a pair of salopettes are also worth buying to keep your legs dry. Shades and ski goggles meanwhile can stop rain from getting in your eyes.
The magic of Merino
Merino is a popular Spanish wool with many good properties that make it ideal as a thermal base layer clothing. It’s great for keeping you warm, whilst providing insulation and staying odour-free. The likes of Minus33 Merino wool socks are great for keeping your feet warm whilst also not getting smelly when sweaty. There are plenty of other Merino products out there from shirts to hats.
Adventure accessories
There is a multitude of other accessories that can be worn to make your outdoor adventure more comfortable. Hats can protect against the sun or chill, with many multi-purpose varieties out there. Gloves meanwhile can keep your hands warms, whilst preventing blisters on the palms (useful if you’re constantly gripping hiking sticks or ski poles). To protect your eyes from the sun, wind, and rain, a good quality pair of shades can come in handy. Meanwhile, as a protection against all the elements in particularly hostile weather, a balaclava is worth packing.
Whilst not clothing, make sure that you have a good rucksack with you, as well as lots of pockets and storage places. A bum bag could be useful for keeping your phone and money, as well as shades and gloves that you may not want to wear all the time. Various holsters can also be used to store a water bottle.
