Great family memories are often created when you spend some quality time together doing activities you all enjoy. Getting the kids outside can sometimes be a challenge but it won’t be when you suggest an activity or adventure that sounds like a lot of fun.
Here are some suggestions for family-orientated activities that will bring everyone closer together and create some new memories of quality time spent together.
Outdoor screen time
If your children need a little persuasion to get them fully subscribed to the idea of outdoor fun a subtle way of getting them outside would be to plan a movie night in your backyard.
All it needs is some outdoor furniture sectional seating for the best seats in the house and a bit of family teamwork to create the movie screen you will need for your night’s entertainment.
Delegate some tasks between each other, from creating the makeshift screen for your projector to making some snacks to enjoy alongside the movie, then sit back and share some quality time with an entertaining night under the stars together.
A nature scavenger hunt
You don’t have to spend loads of money to have lots of outdoor fun with your family and a great example of this would be to create a nature scavenger hunt. The way to do this is to collect a number of natural items that you find all around you in an open space like a park and fix them to a piece of paper.
Give this sheet to your kids and challenge them to find every one of these items to win the game. They will enjoy searching out these things while getting some exercise running around.
Go camping in your backyard
Most kids absolutely love the adventure of going camping and even if you have little ones that are not yet ready for a full-on camping trip you can easily create a camp in your backyard.
You could either work on creating your own tent using sticks and other nature items or use a pop-up tent for a quick and easy solution.
An easy game that everyone will want to play
Another fun activity to play is an outdoor version of noughts and crosses. It is very simple to make, as all you need is a handful of twigs and some discs that you can cut out of cardboard. Lay the twigs on the lawn in a grid and set up a family challenge where the winner stays on for the next game.
Playing some simple games like this will be lots of fun and you can all use your imagination to think up some other games that you would all like to play in your backyard, or anywhere.
Take a hike
Turn every walk into an adventure and go on a hiking trail with the kids.
Map out some routes that you would like to follow and pack some drinks and snacks, before heading off for some serious exploring that everyone will love, especially if you all talk about where you would like to go and what you would like to see.
A day at the beach is always a winner
If you want an almost guaranteed great family day out you can almost always bank on the seaside delivering the goods. Building sandcastles, splashing around in the sea, and treating everyone to ice cream are just some of the fun things that make a day at the beach so popular.
Remember to take your bucket and spade and maybe pack a picnic too, so that you can spend the whole day enjoying everything that a seaside excursion offers.
Give your kids a bit of the garden to themselves
If you want to create some activities that the kids can do outdoors on a regular basis you could encourage them to give gardening a go.
Most kids love to get their hands dirty and the chance to do some digging. If you create a small plot for them they can learn how to grow herbs and vegetables, getting them to dig the holes for the plants and then nurturing them with regular watering.
They will be excited when they see the plants starting to grow and that should encourage them to get outside more often.
Bowling with a fun twist
Even if you have already had a great day outside the fun doesn’t have to stop just because the sun’s gone down. One idea to try is a family game of glow in the dark bowling. This is easy to create, all you have to do is get ten bottles of water and then drop a glow stick in each one so that you get instant luminous skittles for your nighttime bowling game.
Get creative outside
Painting pictures and doing crafts is not just an activity for rainy days and when you are indoors. In fact, you can maybe allow them to get even messier while they are creating their work of art as you don’t have to worry so much about the mess when they are playing outside.
If you like to be creative and enjoy painting it would be a great activity to share and you can even judge each other’s work when each masterpiece has been completed!
Try a bug hunt
Kids seem to love the prospect of searching for insects and a bug hunt is a great activity that all the family can get involved with. All you need for your adventure is a piece of paper and a pen to mark down what you find, plus a jar and a magnifying glass so that you can take a closer look at the things you find.
You can talk to your children about all the bugs you find and that means its a great opportunity to combine a bit of education with some solid outdoor enjoyment.
There are absolutely loads of activities you can do outside when you are looking for some family fun and many of these activities don’t cost much to do or can be done for free. What are you waiting for? Start planning your outdoor adventures and enjoy the chance to get closer together and create some magical memories.
