Operation Smile!

Have you ever heard of Operation Smile?  They are an international children’s medical charity that helps change the lives of children!  They provide reconstructive surgery and medical care for children born with facial deformities like cleft lips and cleft palates.

Today I learned that every three minutes a child is born with a cleft!  I had no idea it was that common!  And one in 10 of those children will die before they reach their first birthday.  Without surgery, the survivors are sometimes unable to eat, speak, socialize or smile.  The reconstructive surgeries are expensive and the majority of the parents of these children will not be able to afford the needed surgeries.  This is so sad!

Operation Smile is largest volunteer-based medical charity that free cleft surgeries.   They have provided more that 3.5 million patient evaluations and over 200,000 free surgeries for these kids that are born with facial deformities.  This is just since 1982!  They are changing the lives of these children and sometimes even saving their lives!

They provide these services in over 60 countries!  They can not do it without volunteers and supporters though!  Here is another way you can help!  If you are going to be renting text books this year, check out CampusBookRentals.com.   They have partnered with Operation Smile and are donating over 1,000 life saving cleft lip surgeries this year to children in need!  They donate to Operation Smile with each textbook rented.

They also have a new program called RentBack.  So if you have textbooks, you don’t need to sell them!  Let RentBack rent them back to other students and make you 2-4 times the amount of money!  Each time your book gets rented, you get paid!
