Benefits of an Online Savings Account

11.03.2010 by Girl on Fire // Leave a Comment

I’m trying to get smarter with my money.  In fact after Christmas I am going on an 21 days spending fast to really get myself on track.  It sounds easy, but I promise it won’t be.

I have been looking into tools to use to help me get my finances under control.  With all the medical bills I am racking up and then also the fact that we really want to buy our own house…it’s a mess.  I have to fix it.

I was reading about getting an online savings account and was impressed by what I read.  If you keep a minimum of $1,000 in the InterestPlus account, you can earn a 1.30% annual percentages yield (APY).  One thing that I was concerned about was the ease of getting to my money if there was an emergency.  With an online savings account I wasn’t sure how that all worked.  I read that you can easily transfer the money between the online account and your regular bank accounts.  Simple clicks on your computer and you are done.

There are no fees or minimum balances and you can get one opened and started for only $1.00!  Your money will also be FDIC insured.  Being able to start a savings account with only $1.00 is awesome.  That’s about all I have at the moment!  No excuses on that one right?

So after reading and processing all of this information I began looking in to a High Yield Money Market Account.  Honestly, I wasn’t sure what it was.  The information I found was easy for me to understand though.  A High Yield Money Market Account is still a savings account.  It’s a savings account that offers a higher rate of return on your money.  Cool thing is, you still only need $1.00 to get it started!  Again, this type of account is also FDIC insured.  It’s easy to get to your money in this sort of account too.  You can access it with free checks, an ATM card and online transfers.

I’m feeling more confident about my journey with money since I know there are all of these online tools available to me.  Banking online sounds like it is just what I need.
