Oldschool Communication vs Social Media

07.13.2009 by Girl on Fire // 7 Comments

dreamstimefree_7966554Apparently, to stay on top of things today you must  read Myspace bulletins and Facebook status’.  I guess the whole give a friend a call thing got lost when texting became a trend.  I’m more oldschool.  Please don’t text me, I would rather you called.  Yea, texting has a place, and on occasion I can understand it’s use, but for a conversation?  Uh, no.  Email is fine, but don’t expect me to know what is going on in your life just because you posted it to Myspace or Facebook.  How am I supposed to keep up?dreamstimefree_1034144

Yes I am a SAHM/WAHM mom, but I am not just sitting here on my ass cruisin’ social media sites.  I’m actually working when I get the chance.  It takes me a lot longer to complete a simple task because unlike people that work outside the home, I am still here with my children.  There are no breaks, no vacations, no peace and quiet. So yea, it may take me 30 min to complete a post that would take an uninterrupted person 10 min.  Graphics may get started and then put on hold until after lunch is made, diapers are changed and cuddling.

I try to be on top of it all, but you know what?  I am human.  I am one person trying to do a crap load of stuff.  I can not do it all, but I sure as hell try. I certainly can not keep up with bulletins and status’.  Sorry.  Maybe I’m just that lame…

~still kickin’ it old school…want my digits?

How about you?  What do you think social media has done to oldschool communication?

Technology brings with it less social interaction in my opinion. When I was growing up and computers hit the scene it was rude to not handwrite a letter to someone. Today, I think it would take me hours to pen something. 🙂

When it comes to phone calls or texts, I prefer phone calls too. I get enough electronic chatter so it’s nice to actually hear a real person and not just chimes.

I actually hate when my phone rings. It takes time out of my already busy day to stop and talk. The ONLY people I talk to on the phone are my parents. I am a total internet communications person. I too work from home too, though I have no kids. I have managed several businesses, owned some, and now own two. I am MORE busy now working from home than I ever was doing any past line of work. I thought I was busy managing Bath & Body Works, especially during holidays. That sounds like a vacation now compared to how much working I do from home. LOL! So, like I said, for me doing it old school isn’t something I can make time for. It is easy to keep up communication online, because I am already on here doing work. Ya know?

Exactly! I swear I became a member of those sites to keep in touch or get a hold of old friends and its too overwhelming sometimes. I figure if its important I’ll get a call. I’ll even go as far as an email, but if they don’t want to miss something they better get old school and call me!

hey whats your myspace, I have u on facebook but not myspace. Mine is myspace.com/chickenista friend me… we can not read our messages together?

I have to tell you I was shocked recently to find out they no longer teach children cursive writing at school. It seemed odd, the teachers said not many people use it anymore. I thought yes, if we stop teaching it, more and more people will stop using it.

There is nothing like a personal phone call or a handwritten message that it seems only my grandmother sends anymore. While I do a lot of the text messaging and emailing to keep up with life, I always make time to have a conversation with my kids, family and friends and anyone who will take 5 minutes to talk to me. I love face to face interaction – you’re not lame!

    🙂

I’m kinda inbetween. I don’t mind emails, online chatting or texting, but I don’t mind talking on the phone either. I’m just not very good at callin’ up an old friend and chatting. I’m better at sending an email now and again.

I do get bugged when people keep texting me back and forth instead of just calling me. It’s annoying. And it’s annoying when my teen freakin’ texts me from UPSTAIRS! WTH!?

So… call me, text me, whatever. I’m good. And I HAVE your digits. Does that make me extra cool?!?

I actually started to leave a comment here last night, but realized I was basically writing a book so I deleted it. What it pretty much said was “I totally agree!” People are so impersonal now. Texting instead of talking, posting personal crap on myspace or facebook that’s no one’s business, sending evites instead of actual invitations…..I think computers will be the death of us all one day.
