I have had a secret for a bit now, it’s time to spill it. I have a new puppy coming! If you have been here for a while you know that I have a few degenerative chronic illnesses and they affect my life tremendously. We have been working on getting a suitable service dog for many years and that year has finally arrived.
We have always had dogs, my entire life I have always been a dog person. Currently, we have 3 with 1 on the way. Most of you know sweet Molly! Molly was a rescue that we brought in several years ago. 2.5lbs and living on the streets! It is amazing that she survived.
Then there is Plissken, my current service dog. But Plissken has an issue that prevents him from being able to do public access work. He helps me great at home with mobility assistance, medical alert, and DPT tasks. His issue? He is way too protective. He wants to eat all of the people that are not his family. That is a no go for a service dog. Here he is when he was a sweet adorable little puppy. He is still sweet to us and still adorable, just giant-sized now…. 120lbs!
Then there is Greta the Great! She is our working livestock guardian. She is a Great Pyrenees and is wonderful at her job. Such a smart sweet girl. I wouldn’t mind getting her a partner to work with one day! Wonderful breed! Very gentle giant at 83lbs.
The New Puppy
So all of that being said brings us to the new puppy! I’m so super excited to introduce you to my new service dog prospect. Here is a photo of her that her breeder sent me. She is a Merle Great Dane and 3 weeks old in this photo. She will be 4 weeks on February 4th, 2019! I have not told anyone what her name will be yet, but I will announce it soon. She will have her own Instagram and Facebook set up so people can follow along with her training. Right now she has her litter name, which is “Charlie”. Check out that unibrow!
Preparing for a New Puppy
Preparing for a new puppy is like getting ready for a new baby! I am in the nesting process right now. Clearing out all of the clutter so that when she gets here everything is nearly puppy proof already.
I like to do a lot of my shopping from home because of my mobility and I love having access to reviews on pet products to help me make my decisions. I found this all covered on a website called Dog Product Picker! They have all sorts of products to help me make sure I have everything covered here at home. I love the review articles as well.
I need puppy toys for sure. It is always a good idea to have a variety of toys available so you can redirect chewing. All dogs have their favorites, so starting out with a variety will help you narrow it down to what your new puppy likes the best.
Beneficial Games for Puppies
Fetch is a great game to play with all dogs, especially those that you will want to train to retrieve things for you. Being disabled makes games like fetch a bit tough. My arms are weak and easily tire out and dystonia makes me not have the greatest control and aim haha. Thankfully you can get an automatic fetch machine to play when you are unable to keep up with the demands of play from your new puppy.
Doggie Doors
Sometimes getting up and about to meet potty demands can be hard. Some of you may be gone for long hours during the day as well. Amazingly enough, you can get that covered with an electronic dog door! My brother has one of these that has made life so much easier for them as well as their pets. They have one that works with special collars that the dogs wear and only opens for them. How amazing is that?
