So how are those New Years Resolutions coming along? Here we are nearing the end of February. Have you met any of your goals? Stuck to any changes? Well if you had eating healthier to your list you may want to think about how whole grain can help you. Dietary Guidelines recommend choosing products with a whole grain listed as the first ingredient.
See that white check in the image above? The General Mills cereals (including Cheerios®, Lucky Charms®, Cinnamon Toast Crunch®, Honey Nut Cheerios® and Total®) with the white check have more whole grain than any other single ingredient.
Dr. Travis Stork, emergency room physician and host of “The Doctors, has some recommendations to help you include whole grain easily into your diet. They include:
- Start Early! The Dietary Guidelines recommend people get at least 48 grams of whole grain in their daily diets. Get a jump-start on the day’s nutrition by incorporating whole grain into your morning routine. For instance, when choosing cereal make sure whole grain is listed as the first ingredient. One easy choice is cereal with the white check, which have more whole grain than any other single ingredient.
- Make Simple Swaps. Choose whole grain versions of the foods you love. Great options include whole wheat pasta and whole wheat bread or even whole grain crackers. Also, try different types of whole grain. Use brown rice instead of white rice as a side dish at dinner or popcorn, which is a whole grain, for a snack.
- Don’t Judge a Food by Its Cover. The front of food packages provide good nutritional cues, but don’t forget to read the ingredients and check the nutrition label and side labels for additional health information. Cereals with the white check even include the amount of whole grain per serving on packaging.
General Mills has developed “Fast Lane for Whole Grain”, which is an online educational game. Consumers can navigate virtual grocery store aisles and identify products that have whole grain as the first ingredient, with the option to enter a sweepstakes to win one of each of the 50 cereals with the white check.
For more information on the importance of whole grain and a chance to enter the “Fast Lane for Whole Grain” sweepstakes, visit www.WholeGrainNation.com.
One Not So Average Mama reader will win 5 boxes of General Mills cereal with the white check!

I hate to admit it but I never really look at the ingredients when purchasing foods but could really use more whole grain foods in my diet, especially for health reasons. I will have to start looking for foods and cereals with the white check when I go grocery shopping.
Thanks for the informative post 🙂

I will definitely read the ingredient list closer
it will make me look at the ingredients closer b/c i never have done that before!
I’m something of a fanatic about reading food ingredients. The White Chreck will make that much easier to do at a glance.
I scan the food ingredients, and now the White Check will make it even easier so I don’t really have to look at the food ingredients
I will now look at the ingredient that is listed first on the list because that means there is the most of that in the product.
i hardly ever read the stuff, but with these killer gmo’s that are not listed?..everybody should be worried whether those are used are not.
i do read them
Will definitely look at the ingredients closer – and incorporate whole grains more into my diet! grammypenny@frontier.com
It’s made me more aware to read labels
Thanks so much
It has not changed the way I read ingredient lists. I have been scrutinizing them for years.
I will look for whole grain content on the boxes from now on
I ALWAYS READ THE INGREDIENTS LIST ON NEW ITEMS THAT I HAVE NOT PURCHASED BEFORE AND I NOTICE THAT AS PEOPLE AGE THEY READ THE INGREDIENTS MORE
I like to read the labels to make sure that it is healthy for me and my family.
thank you

It will make me look at the ingredients of products I’m thinking of buying closer
I love the white check…it keeps me from wading through ingredients on junk laden cereal!
I will look to see what is listed first in the ingredients. I didn’t realize they were any a particular order
I will look for whole grain foods more often
It has taught me to keep a close eye on those ingredients to get the most out of my diet.
I’m not sure it will change anything for me because I’m already a label reader.
I’m honestly not overly concerned about the ingredients. I usually only look to see if something is made with butter instead of margarine or oils or doesn’t have something I don’t like to eat in it. I’ve been eating the same things for about 49 years now and am in good health. So, if it’s not broke, don’t fix it.
I will try to start reading the ingredients more so I can get the things I need for my diet!
I will read the ingredients before buying.
I already know how to read labels
I’ll be looking at it a lot closer. I could use more whole grain into my diet.
I have been reading ingredient lists for as long as they have been there. I have always been interested in the nutritional values of my foods and serving sizes. But, I am always learning a bit more about what is better for me, too.

I’m definitely going to look for more products that list whole grains first on the ingredient list.
This doesnt really change anything for me, since I already look on the ingredient list
I always try and remember to read the top ingredients and look for whole grains
I actually have been seeing some research on how companies promote whole grains in their products, when all they have to do is contain a miniscule amount! It’s sad! This has definitely opened my eyes to actually check the ingredients list for actual whole grains!

I will pay more attention to the ingredients list.
The white check on the boxes will make it easier
it will also make me look at the ingredients closer.
SINCE I DON’T ALWAYS LOOK AT THE INGREDIENT LIST , THIS MAKES ME THINK THAT I SHOULD BE READING THE INGREDIENT LIST FROM NOW ON 🙂
shebebes@yahoo.com
Right now I’m not really a label reader, but I am going to start!
I already read labels as often as I can, but this has made me decide to look even closer now. bekki1820cb at gmail dot com
it makes me want to keep a better eye on the ingredients list! o.O

I usually don’t read the ingredients list, so I love that they put the white check on the front of the box. It lets me know right away that that cereal has healthy whole grains for my family
It will make me look at the lists closer to see if whole grains are included
I’m definitely going to try to read more about whole grains!
I will focus on Whole Grains in my daily food intake. Thank you for bringing it to my awareness.
tam s.
it will help me to make good, healthy choices more easily
i’ve been trying to read more lately
I grew up in the grocery business, so I knew most of this already, but the white check is a good guide.
I now keep an eye out for whole grain ingredients.
I am excited to know that reading labels is much easier than expected!
if u are buying cereal make sure that whole grains is first on the list great tip
thanks
I read the actual ingredient list rather than what is written on the box
I already inspect every food label carefully. I look for things that are high in fiber and protein and low in fat.
i’m a careful shopper and read labels i try not to put garbage in my familys systems
I will look at the ingredients more closely
I’ll be checking the ingredients more carefully and choosing whole grain version when available
I will choose only whole grains now!
I will look for whole grain!
it will help me look for whole grain and healthy foods
retirenavalflyer(at)gmail.com
I will see how much fiber and grains are on things
vmkids3 at msn dot com
I will always try to buy food with more whole grain!
it helps me understand and not buy unhealthy cereals
i rarely look at the labels but i think i do need more fiber so this is great for easily knowing the fiber content in cereal
I learned that the first ingredient listed on the side of the box is what the food has to most off so if it doesn’t say whole grains first then it’s not a food rich in whole grains.
I’ve always read ingredient lists, but I will be sure to be checking for more whole grains 🙂
I have read ingredient lists, but not in this way before.
I will look A LOT closer at the labels now!
it has not i have always read labels
ardelong2(at)gmail(dot)com
I will actively look to make sure I am eating more whole grains.

I’ve always been a careful label reader and will continue to be with this information. Thanks for the giveaway.
I will be taking a closer look and learn more
mightynaynay(at)cs.com
I’ll start looking to see which foods have better whole grain options.
I will start reading the what is inside of the box a lot closer instead of just skimming the front of the box.
lauraemerson17 at yahoo dot com
I will definately look for whole grain listed.
I never used to look at ingredients labels, but now that I am watching what I eat and being more careful it is very important to look at them. Thanks for the giveaway
karenb834atyahoo.com
It really won’t TOO much, because I’ll have to look at the back of the box anyhow.
i will pay closer attention to the nutrition labels
marygardner49 at aol dot com
It will be much more easy to eat whole grains
it probably won’t change much for me
I will look for the white check now. I didn’t realize it meant anything before.
helpful in choosing
will give me more info for better informed decision

I always look at the nutritional labels so it won’t change anything.
