One of my favorite movies growing up was Mary Poppins. I even had the soundtrack record. Yes, a record…I still know most of the words to the songs as well. I bet that record is packed away somewhere…I need to look.
Mary Poppins was so magical to me as a child. Heck she still is. I was thrilled to watch it again recently on the Mary Poppins 50th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray Combo pack. It was a cool experience re-watching it after seeing Saving Mr. Banks and knowing the story behind the movie and everything it took to get it out there. You have got to watch Saving Mr. Banks! It was also great watching it after meeting Pete Menefee and hearing about his experience as a Chimney Sweep in the movie.
It would be hard for me to believe that you have never watched Mary Poppins…but I am sure there are some of you out there that have not experienced this bit of Disney magic. Mary Poppins came out in 1964 and was produced by Walt Disney himself. Walt went through a lot to make this movie happen, watch Saving Mr. Banks to get what I mean. Mary Poppins is a magical combination of live action with animation. Even though the story takes place in London, it was interesting to learn that it was actually filmed entirely at Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California.
Mary Poppins stars the incredible Julie Andrews as a nanny of the magical sort. The family is a mess and she comes just in time to help them out. As a child watching the movie, you are lost in the magic. As an adult, especially a parent…well you get something more from it. Life is short and we take too much for granted. We stretch ourselves thin. Mary Poppins along with the changes happening in my own life have made me take a long and harder look at what is really important. Family. I hope that you will re-watch Mary Poppins yourself along with your family and see how it touches you as adult and parent.
Definitely one to put under the Christmas tree this year for the whole family to enjoy. Have a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious Christmas and make 2014 the year of good changes!

Love this movie. When we heard a commercial for Saving Mr Banks, my youngest asked if Mary Poppins was really Nanny McPhee? NO! I like Nanny McPhee but it was then that I realized my kids had never watched Mary Poppins. I must rectify this very very soon. Winter Break is probably a great time 🙂
