Making Healthy Eating Choices For Kids

09.02.2009 by Girl on Fire // 13 Comments

looneyI want to focus this post on starting a conversation with you guys about healthy eating choices for kids.  I’m going to tell you to tell you what works for me and then I would love to hear what works for you.

At our house, I simply keep the junk out.  Yes, I do buy some goodies.  Trust me..the girls are not doing without.  These are treats…not an every day occurrence.  Some people add a desert to every meal they serve!  This is not good for kids.  It is teaching them very bad habits!

We also do not buy a lot of prepared convenience foods.  We cook most of our meals together.  Kids are much more interested in trying a new food if they helped prepare it.  When we had a garden, the girls were also more interested in eating the foods they helped to grow and pick.  It really does work.

Another way they try new and different healthy foods in Bento!  Bento is so much fun to make and eat.  If you have a picky eater this might be something  you should give a try.  It is basically turning food into edible art!  It’s pretty awesome!

83671bb2a4_MediumBasketMomLogic has some great ideas posted on healthy lunch, snack and dinner ideas for your family.  Be sure to check it out.  Also check out the Grand Prize Gift Basket they are giving away.

As a reminder…as part of the program I am happy to announce that they will be providing one of my readers with a gift basket! The basket is a $100 value! It is filled with Looney Tunes products like DVDs, plush toys, green shopping bags and non-perishable Eating Right products.

We do a lot of the same things you do Brandy.

We have a garden and the kids enjoy seeing where our food comes from, I have them help me prepare new things so they will more than likely try it, and we do bento as well.

My son is a self-made vegetarian, he will not eat any meat(other than the ocassional chicken nuggets we get or a slice of bacon at breakfast), so we eat lots of veggies and fruits since thats his favorite.

We have a garden too which has been great. I’m making a goal to set a better example because I love junk food. I do. I’d live off of it if I could. lol I don’t want my kids to turn into me!!
I also use cookie cutters to make food “cooler” looking. Livie loves heart sandwiches…

Tori how come you don’t like veggies? Have you tried them again since you are older, is it an aversion from when you were a kid? Did someone force you to eat veggies you didn’t like?

Those are two that I do not like. I prefer raw veggies over cooked.

I like raw carrots, brocoli, cauliflower and cucumbers. Are cucumbers a veggie or a fruit? I just don’t eat enough of them. Livie eats carrots like she’s eating a bag of chips. lol

One thing that helps us is to not be TOO strict with food choices. It seems the best way to encourage our kids to eat healthy fruits/veggies is by offering a little reward with them, like apples and cream cheese dip or bananas with chocolate.

I totally agree on this! Also, when having my kids try something we use the three bite rule. If they still hate it after 3 bites they don’t have to eat it.

I always make fruit a part of my dinner meal. It cuts down on my need for dessert!

P.S. Does anyone else think it is a little funny that the t-shirt in the prize pack is from a company called Junk Food?
