As a mother of 3 and one of the 3 getting closer and closer to being a teenager, I start to think ahead. Things are a lot different from when I was a kid, but teenage drinking is not. We all drank and partied. Thankfully, I was a smart kid and did not drink and drive. A lot of kids did…not so smart.
I want to be sure that I talk to my daughters about things that can happen. The consequences they do not think about. I want them to know they could die, or they could kill others. I have to be blunt. Blunt makes an impression, sugar coating…not so much.
Communication is the biggest key to getting your kids to make smart choices. Kids left in the dark about life and consequences tend to not realize the reality of what can happen when they make bad choices. I know moms that will not let their kids know about real life, it kind of scares me. Kids need to know about life, you can not keep them blind and then expect them to know what to do when put in a situation. It is our jobs as parents to ensure our kids know! Would you rather your kids learn the right things from you, that include your values…or would you rather them learn the wrong way from someone else?
Power Of Parents: It’s Your Influence is a new website by MADD. The site includes research proven strategies to help prevent underage drinking. There is a section where you can ask and get advice from experts, tips and even a handbook for parents. The website is brand new, but there is still plenty to go check out, including an online community!
Here are even more resources to check out:
I wrote this review while participating in a blog campaign by Mom Central on behalf of MADD. A donation was made to MADD in my name to thank me for taking the time to participate.
