Let’s Talk About Menopause…

09.21.2011 by Girl on Fire // 2 Comments

Got Menopause?
Well I haven’t gotten there yet…but, I do know I am headed that way!

If you are like me, then you like to be prepared for everything.  I always want to know all the details of anything that I am going to be involved with.  I always want to know the good, the bad and the most possibly ugly.

Thankfully there are websites out there that are set up just about the changes that happen with menopause.  Got menopause is one of those sites.

They have information that we should all know before Menopause even starts.  Perimenopause can hit some women in their late 30’s!  I’m almost 37! Is 37 late 30’s?  Ugh…I never think of myself as being that old. For most women though, it hits between 40 and 55.  Keep in mind that you can still get pregnant.  Things slow down, but it’s all still working!  In fact, even though fertility decreases, the second highest unintended pregnancy rate is for women between 40-44 years old!

The site is full of information, including menopause symptoms.  There are 34 different symptoms of menopause. Some physical. Some physiological. This site lists the different forms of treatment for menopause symptoms.  There are even some herbal remedies you can try.

Did you know that the average woman hits menopause around the age of 51? But some women don’t enter menopause until they are in their 60’s.  After a woman has stopped her periods for one year, they are considered to be in post menopause.  During this time symptoms won’t occur as often or as severe.

I love that the site has forums and even groups!  This is a great place to go with your questions and concerns so that you can talk to people that are going through the same thing.  I know that support is always helpful, more so when it comes from those that understand.

So, what about you?  Are you there yet?  Close?  Nervous?

I’m so glad for these forums! I am 52 and having a tough time with symptoms. One problem is that my doctor is a 30-something male–an excellent clinician whom I trust completely, but what the heck does he know about the experience of menopause? The women in my family of my mother’s generation used hormone therapy, something I am NOT doing. So I have been relying on forums such as this for information about going through this process naturally.

I am been there done that at 51. I was perimenopausal in my late 40s and by 49 I was through menopause.

I think I had more symptoms in perimenopause than I ever did with menopause. I had a bit of moodiness and flackey-ness (for lack of a better word) but never really had hot flashes or anything that were bothersome. IF I had hot flashes it was through one winter, and they werent bad in a cold climate 😉

My most noticeable symptom which I have yet to shake of is weight gain around the middle… I was never stick thin, but I never carried weight on my waist it was always hips and behind. It is the most common symptom of menopause and a toughie! THAT I am still struggling with!

I went through menopause basically alone- my female relatives were deceased for the most part so I had no one to ‘talk’ to besides my doctor. Luckily, I have a ‘she’ and she just happens to be 15 years older. She was so understanding and must have spent an hour with me explaining that things slow down and to move it or lose it. She also explained after the loss of estrogen we women need to practice better care of our hearts and our bodies,

I never took any hormones, it was never indicated and the Dr. didn’t believe in them unless it was a worst case situation. She did recommend vitamins/supplements like black cohosh (spelling) but that was it.

I am glad there are so many sites out there but do make sure you go to one that you can trust- and rejoice- no more periods !!!!
