Keeping Kids Safe When the Weather is Hot

08.02.2012 by Girl on Fire // Leave a Comment

The summer is filled with all kinds of fun activities. From beach trips to parties, swimming outings and camping, there are many great things to do when the weather is hot. There are also many ways to get hurt, unfortunately. Keeping kids safe during summer activities is essential to having an enjoyable summer. Enjoy lasting memories of great times by following a few simple steps to keep kids safe this summer:

Teach Water Safety

Drowning is a major cause of childhood deaths. It is also a highly preventable occurrence. Teaching your kids water safety is necessary if they are going to be going to beaches and pools. Enroll them in a water safety class at your local community center or YMCA. Teach them to stay away from bodies of water if no lifeguard is present. Instruct your children about how to get out of a rip current by swimming parallel to the shore instead of into the swell.

Basic swimming lessons will give your kids the skills they need to get out of a pool or ocean if they become stranded. Teaching water safety is an essential part of keeping kids safe during summer activities.

Staying Sun Safe

In hot temperatures, it is important to keep kids hydrated if they are exposed to the sun. This means giving them adequate water and cutting back on sodas, juices and sports drinks. Encourage kids to take frequent breaks from playing to get water. Dehydration can lead to disorientation, fatigue and dizziness. Going long periods of time in high temperatures can lead to heatstroke or death.  Dress kids in clothing that is breathable and cool. For younger children, make sure they wear sun hats, sunglasses and sunscreen to protect from the sun’s harmful UV rays. Keep kids hydrated to keep their bodies in optimal health during outdoor summer play. Prolonged exposure to the sun can be very damaging, so take steps to keep children protected in the summer.

Teach the Buddy System

The summer is a time for outdoor exploration. Unfortunately, children may not be vigilant while playing. Some wander off and get hurt. Teach your children to take a buddy with them while playing outdoor games, hiking or biking. This will give them someone to assist them or go for help if they get hurt. The buddy system is essential in keeping kids safe.

When it comes to summer safety, you can never be too cautious. Follow these tips to keep your kids safe during summer activities.
