Is Your Body Clock Running Too Fast? How Stress Can Age You and What to Do About It

03.29.2020 by Girl on Fire // Leave a Comment

There are plenty of factors that go into aging other than time itself. From the very moment, we are conceived, we are aging. There is no going backward in reality, but as we age we can take steps towards looking and feeling younger.

Mental Illness

Managing our stress is just one of the many ways that we can slow down the signs of aging and lead a healthier life. Too much cortisol, or the stress hormone, in our bodies, is harmful, and there are plenty of supplements from vitamins to CBD capsules that can help regulate that.

So let’s see what we can do to slow down our body clock.

What is stress?

Stress is how the body responds to any particular demand. It is a response to physical, mental, emotional and spiritual changes. Stress is a normal and unavoidable part of living that can be either negative or positive.

stress

Generally, when we hear the word stress, negative notions come to mind, like getting fired or facing a fear. But there are positive stressors as well, like getting married, getting a promotion or hosting a holiday gathering. Stress, whether positive or negative, can affect your health.

Stress and Aging

You’ve probably been told that too much worry and stress will cause fine lines and wrinkles. But stress does more than that. It can lead to vision and hearing loss by increasing your blood pressure and adrenaline levels.

Aging Parents

Being under stress tends to cause us to make unhealthy lifestyle choices, like poor diet and inadequate sleep. All of these will speed up your aging process and significantly decrease your quality of life as you age.

What You Can Do

There are many things you can do to manage your stress. Not only can some of these suggestions help to improve your overall health, they can also help to reduce some of the other negative effects stress tends to have on us.

  • Regular exercise is a great way to manage cortisol levels in the body, keep your joints supple, reduce your risk of certain chronic diseases and boost your mood.
  • Paying attention to how your body responds to stress can help you to minimize it. If you find that you are less energetic when you’re stressed, you have the power to counteract your low energy levels. The more you spend time observing your reactions to stress, the better you will be at catching it sooner and doing something about it.
  • Talk to your doctor or mental health provider about how you are feeling. Getting their advice on how you can better manage your stress and your responses to it can also help you minimize the negative effects.

Although stress is something we all experience, the ways in which we handle it are vastly different. This difference in how we handle stress will make a big difference in how it affects your aging process. Meditation, exercise and rest are just some tools you have to beat the clock and reduce your stress.
