Is She Ready for Contacts?

05.18.2010 by Girl on Fire // 4 Comments

Morgan, my oldest daughter, is now 12.  She has worn glasses since she was around 3 years old.  She always wore them without any issues…until of course now!

Morgan wants contacts!  I can understand why, she has gorgeous eyes!  Morgan wears glasses to help strengthen her eye muscles.  When she was 3 her eye started wandering inward.  Just one eye.  Now that she has been wearing them so long she can take her glasses off and the eye doesn’t wander until it starts getting tired.

At her last appointment we asked a few quick questions about contacts for Morgan.  The Eye Doctor seems to think that she could wear them and it still help her eye.  Her vision has improved dramatically over the last several years.  I know this is because she has been responsible about wearing her glasses.

Wearing the glasses for so many years has definitely increased the strength in her eye muscle.  I’ve been debating this for awhile.  Is she mature enough to take care of them?  I’m leaning towards yes.  Recently Morgan has taken a lot more pride in her appearance.  She is definitely turning into a young lady!  She pays attention to bathing, skincare, makeup and hair now.

Knowing and seeing how she is putting so much more time into her appearance makes me think that she would take good care of her eyes while using contacts.  Yes, she is 12…but in a lot of ways she is a bit more mature and responsible than other kids her age.  Yea we still have the teen/mama arguments and power struggles…but I think she would do well with contacts.

It makes my decision even easier knowing all the changes that have happened with contacts!  When I wore contacts I had one pair.  I had to take very good and careful care of them.

Now that you can buy disposables and the prices have went down so much gives me a better feeling about the whole decision.  You can even buy contact lenses online these days at awesome prices.  I shop for everything I can online first.  Even my glasses were purchased online!  I looked at several different brands and styles of contact lenses online and am more confident that this could be an easy choice of switching from glasses to contact lenses for Morgan.

I haven’t quite made my decision yet, but am leaning towards yes.  Do any of you have children Morgan’s age that wear contacts?  If so how did it go?morganfebbwwmsm

No kids yet, but I have been wearing contacts since I was 13. As long as you daughter follows the rules, she should be fine 🙂

Both of my boys got contacts at the age of 12 and have done awesome. Isabel will also get them when she’s 12.

When I was a kid, I had to wait for my 16th birthday to get contacts. My younger sister talked my mother and the doctor into letting her get them earlier than that by refusing to wear her glasses. With all the changes made over the years, kids don’t have to wait that long any more. My son got his contacts at around the age of 12 and had no problems. He was really into sports and had to wear the prescription sports goggles and got tired of that quick and begged me to let him get contacts. Don’t worry at all about saying yes. They are so inexpensive that you don’t have to worry about them losing them and they are so comfortable there is none of the getting used to them period that we used to have. Even the care of the lenses is not such a big deal. They replace them so frequently.

I got contacts when I was in grade 10 or 11. My eye doctor had me wait until my eyes had stopped growing. If Morgan’s doctor thinks she is ready for them and she is willing to cae for them I saw give it a shot. Obviously if she does not care for them properly or if her eye starts havig issues she can go back to glasses (of which she looks gorgeous in btw)
