Is it Safe to Have IVF Abroad?

02.28.2013 by Girl on Fire // 1 Comment

IVF treatment can be very expensive indeed. It is a significant step to take, and with emotions often running high, the decision to have the procedure abroad in order to save money is a very big one indeed. One of the primary concerns for any couple looking into IVF, is the safety of the procedure, specifically regarding how good the clinics and doctors are. Fortunately, there are countless clinics and hospitals worldwide which will meet your high expectations, and it’s only a matter of finding them.

The health and safety of the patient is paramount in absolutely any medical procedure. For this reason, most countries around the world have regulations and standards, which any practising medical centre must adhere to. In addition to these however, are a number of organisations and affiliated groups, which are dedicated to maintaining a high level of car, and are generally optional to join. If a clinic is a member of such a group, it shows that they have gone out of their way to ensure that their standards are very good indeed. Do some research when planning for treatment; find out what standards are like, and see if there are any IVF-specific associations.

Of course, it’s not just the clinic or hospital as a whole that you need to think about. The medical staff that are going to treat you may well have a reputation of their own. If you ensure that the doctors that you are dealing with have the relevant qualifications, you can rest assured that you’re going to receive the level of treatment that you’d expect.

One of the great misconceptions about going abroad for any kind of medical procedure, whether it be IVF or some sort of cosmetic surgery, is that the prices are cheaper, therefore the quality and safety isn’t as good. Quite simply, this isn’t true, because costs are generally not comparable in another country. There are very simple explanations for lower overheads, one of them being wages. Staff may not earn as much in your destination country in comparison to what they might earn in the USA. There are all manner of other reasons, such as higher levels of competition and lower rent.

When finding out what the quality of treatment is like, your best resource is undoubtedly the internet. You’ll be able to find plenty of unbiased information – don’t take the clinic’s word for it. If they have a poor reputation, you’ll easily be able to find out. The same goes for the ones that have a great reputation. Here’s one such review, given to http://fertility.treatmentabroad.com/ by a couple who went to a Spanish clinic:

“My husband and I would like to thank all the staff at Centro Medico Manzanera for the wonderful treatment and care we received. Not only did we have a fantastic outcome, but also a wonderful experience, thanks to the kindness and compassion of all the doctors and staff members at the clinic, along with its relaxing surroundings, welcoming, friendly atmosphere and high standards of professionalism. We would definitely recommend this clinic to anyone who is looking to undergo fertility treatment.”

A final word is that on success rates. This is one of the most significant things to think about when it comes to having IVF treatment. In the very best clinics in the United States, you might expect each cycle of treatment, depending on the type, to be up to around 45%. However, you may find that in other clinics, it may only be around 20%. It’s worth finding out what the success rates are like for any particular clinic. Lower rates may be acceptable if the overall costs make it viable.
