I Totally Just Drank Olive Oil…

Ok, I use olive oil a lot!  I use it in a lot of Raw foods, Cooked foods…etc.  I have never actually taken a swig of it before today, it wasn’t bad!  Thinking about actually doing it though was another story!  I seriously had flashbacks to my first pregnancy where I drank an oil…but that was castor oil.  This was much different.  MUCH different.

I was clueless that there was even such a thing as an Olive Oil Tasting, not to mention a proper way to do it.  Well y’all…I can honestly say I am now a pro at Olive Oil Tasting!  I performed my Olive Oil Tasting with Carapelli Extra Virgin Olive Oil.  I picked it up at Walmart and it was very affordable.

You just have to follow the Four S’s!  Simply pour about a tablespoon into a glass.  Place your hand over the top of the glass and warm the bottom of the glass with your hand.  Then follow the Four S’s as described below.

1. Swirl: When you swirl the olive oil in your glass you release the oils esters.  The esters are the molecules that contain the aroma.
2. Sniff:  Once you have swirled, take a whiff.
3. Slurp:  Sip the oil while taking some air in at the same time.  If you get that slurp noise you have it right.  Kind of like when your soup is too hot!  By doing this the oil will emulsify better and spread through out your mouth giving you a better taste.
4. Swallow:  It should leave no after taste.  

I did all the steps above and still was a bit timid at the actual slurp part.  But, I’m a trooper and I did it and it really wasn’t bad.  You really can smell the aroma from the oil better once you have warmed it in your glass.  I always smell it when I use it while cooking.  The Carapelli Extra Virgin Olive oil smelled great.  It would be wonderful in my Raw Kale Salad.  I actually slurped and swallowed twice!  I wanted to really taste it.  It had a slight peppery sensation.  It was good!
