How To Make Comic Book Themed Shoes with Elmer’s Painters Paint Markers #ExpressYourself

05.07.2012 by Girl on Fire // 28 Comments

My girls are super obsessed with superheroes and comic style art.  So with all the excitement from my trip to NY to see The Avengers, I decided to paint Lauren some comic book themed shoes using Elmer’s Painters Paint Markers and cheapo $5.00 shoes.

What you will need to pull off this awesomeness…

Jump in your vehicle of choice and head to your nearest Walmart.  It is there that you will find everything that you need.

First you need a pair of cheap canvas shoes.  I found these in sizes for all of my girls for only $5 a pair.  Super affordable!

From there you will head on over to the crafting dept.  Now, I was on the hunt for the single Painters Paint Markers so that I could just pick up the colors that I needed.  I have a lot of Painters Paint Markers on hand and really only needed to replenish a few colors.  They single Painters Paint Markers sell for $1.97 at Walmart…but sadly, my Walmart did not have them.

I’m not sure what is going on in our craft dept, but they were low and out of a LOT of stuff.  Slim pickens’…

So I went ahead and picked up the following…

As well as this super flashy silver one…

Then to make sketching out my design easier, I picked up a Singer Fabric Marking Pen.

That’s it!  Now on with the art makin’!

Thank you!!! I normally paint with a brush, so this is a bit different for me. Plus in all honesty it was a horrible pain day and I was a bit shaky.

So cool! You make the project look so easy but I’m sure I wouldn’t have the artistic talent to even sketch to that degree. The shoes are too cute. I have to hide this post so my daughter won’t want some 😛

Super easy! Would have been a lot better if it wasn’t for this sticking Neuro issue! Holding pens and writing, painting, drawing is super difficult for me.

I love this idea! I may need to try it with my daughter. She had dry erase sneakers that she loved coloring on.

Wow!!! I’m loving these, and the ideas for other cool ways to customize are firing off in my head right now. I think it’s even more awesome that kids can pitch and see their own creative work come together in a form that can be displayed while they wear them. Thanks for sharing!

My daughter and I are planning on making these, we already have everything ready to go. We only have one question, can you please explain the dry brush part? We have not painted shoes before, this will be our first pair.

    Thank you so much!
