My girls are super obsessed with superheroes and comic style art. So with all the excitement from my trip to NY to see The Avengers, I decided to paint Lauren some comic book themed shoes using Elmer’s Painters Paint Markers and cheapo $5.00 shoes.
What you will need to pull off this awesomeness…
Jump in your vehicle of choice and head to your nearest Walmart. It is there that you will find everything that you need.
First you need a pair of cheap canvas shoes. I found these in sizes for all of my girls for only $5 a pair. Super affordable!
From there you will head on over to the crafting dept. Now, I was on the hunt for the single Painters Paint Markers so that I could just pick up the colors that I needed. I have a lot of Painters Paint Markers on hand and really only needed to replenish a few colors. They single Painters Paint Markers sell for $1.97 at Walmart…but sadly, my Walmart did not have them.
I’m not sure what is going on in our craft dept, but they were low and out of a LOT of stuff. Slim pickens’…
So I went ahead and picked up the following…
As well as this super flashy silver one…
Then to make sketching out my design easier, I picked up a Singer Fabric Marking Pen.
That’s it! Now on with the art makin’!
Enlist super artistic child to help…my hands hurt…
Let dry between layers of colors!! This is important!
When all that has dried, you can use a glittery fabric paint to give it some added dimension. I use a dry brush to get this airbrushed look.
Behold your awesome creation while soaking up all the compliments from your children…
Be sure to follow Elmer’s on Twitter as well as Facebook!

AWESOME shoes! I love it – they turned out really cute.
Thank you!!! I normally paint with a brush, so this is a bit different for me. Plus in all honesty it was a horrible pain day and I was a bit shaky.
So cool! You make the project look so easy but I’m sure I wouldn’t have the artistic talent to even sketch to that degree. The shoes are too cute. I have to hide this post so my daughter won’t want some 😛
Super easy! Would have been a lot better if it wasn’t for this sticking Neuro issue! Holding pens and writing, painting, drawing is super difficult for me.
WOW! You’re so creative! I would never think of doing this!! Thanks for the idea 🙂
Thanks!! It was fun!
Love these!! Reminds me of when I decorated my keds when I was a kid!
Yes! Plus at $5 you can’t really mess up too bad!
I want a pair, they totally rock!
They had these $5 shoes in adult sizes as well!
Grab the paints and get going!!!
Absolutely, planning on it! 🙂 Already have the paints, but not the gold/silver ones, have to grab some of those.
I love this idea! I may need to try it with my daughter. She had dry erase sneakers that she loved coloring on.
Let me know if you make some!
This is absolutely adorable! I wish I could draw this well, but maybe my son will be able to do it one day! In the meantime – I see at Etsy gold mine!
Those turned out super cute! I have a list a mile long of projects I want to make with the Painters!
These are adorable and look sooo easy to make. Thanks for sharing.
SUPER cool idea! I love it. I want to make a pair for myself too. :-)!
Wow!!! I’m loving these, and the ideas for other cool ways to customize are firing off in my head right now. I think it’s even more awesome that kids can pitch and see their own creative work come together in a form that can be displayed while they wear them. Thanks for sharing!
I love comic, comic books & your comic inspired tennis shoes!!! We’ll have to do something like this after my girl’s drama show with her white tennis shoes. Thanks for the idea!
These are SO cool!! What a fabulous job you did!!
These are great! You did a great job of the tutorial. Thanks!
Wow! Super impressed!! What an awesome job you did on your daughter’s shoes!
Wow, they turned out awesome!
Those are SO COOL!!! I’m a comic book geek so I’d love a pair myself!
Those came out really CUTE!
These are the coolest! We are going to comic-con again this summer and I think this would be a great project for my kids. I might even do a pair for myself!
This is a super fun idea! So creative! Great summer project!
My daughter and I are planning on making these, we already have everything ready to go. We only have one question, can you please explain the dry brush part? We have not painted shoes before, this will be our first pair.
Thank you so much!
