How do You Keep Up with Your Checking Account?

10.28.2011 by Girl on Fire // 3 Comments

With my damaged brain cells keeping up with money has become quite the pain!  I would love to hear your tips for keeping up with your checking accounts. Do you even write checks anymore?  I haven’t ordered checks in 6 years, I still have some from way back when because I rarely use them.

I tend to use my checking account debit card for everything that I can.  What about you?  Do you find yourself using your debit card for everything you can?  Or do you still like to write checks.

Do you have a program on your computer or smart phone that helps you keep track of everything? So far I use Mint.com to manage my accounts from both my phone and computer.

Do you have an interest earning checking account? My bank account doesn’t offer an interest earning checking account, but I read that some banks do, like Aurora Bank.  They have a high interest earning checking account.  That would be a nice thing to have!

I need simple things! I would love to have a checking account that earns cash back when I use the debit card as a credit card.  That would be fantastic!  Please leave your tips below!  I sure could use them!

Sorry Girlie – I have no tips….My bank (BofA) charges me for using my debit account, I have checks but rarely use them, I only know what I have in my account because I look online at it everyday..I am a loser when it comes to financial planning…I definitely need some help in this area!

I rarely write checks but keep some on hand for when the kids need to take money to school for something or whatever. I just ordered a box after using the same 2 boxes for 4 years. lol
I use my debit a ton. I am looking into getting a checking account thru ingdirect.com. They are totally based online and pay interest on your checking. I have a savings account thru them and it’s nice because it’s out of sight, out of mind.

I keep checks on hand purely to pay rent, and that’s really it. Sometimes to support a charity event as well.

Cash back on debit cards? I’ve heard Dave Ramsey recommend Perk Street for that program.

I use ING Direct for my electronic checking account AND savings account as it earns more interest and I link it to my credit union. Katie, you should join a credit union! My husband is a BofA customer and will be joining me over on my side. 🙂

To keep track of everything, I just log onto my accounts every now and then to see how I’m doing. I don’t need exact figures. 🙂
