From looking up “how to fix broken glass stove top” to asking friends and family for their recommendations on how to get your bathroom to sparkle, your home makeover can be a mission like no other. So, where to begin?
Today, we’re going to look at how you could transform your unloved interiors into a show home, step by step (because breaking things down is always easier than trying to achieve the impossible overnight).

Time to vacuum the welcome mat
The entrance to your home is the photo frame around your favorite image. It’s the silverware next to your gourmet meal. The wax-finish you put on your car. Without a little extra care and attention where it is needed at the entrance to your home, you could be letting yourself down – the people entering your house will already be expecting the worst.
For example, if your front door is marked and unkempt, perhaps after months or years of kicking the door open when carrying shopping or even butting against it with the wheels of a pram, the result will be an entrance that says you are too busy to maintain a tidy appearance on the outside so don’t even dream that the inside will look any better. The rough side of a sponge and some soapy water should bring things up to scratch.

Hallway / Porch / Living room
Whether your front door opens into a hallway, a porch, or directly into a room such as the living room, you need to pay attention to a few important details.
Entrances are messy places. People kick off their shoes, dump their school bags, sling their coats, and pile up their junk mail. It’s something we all live with without a second thought, because where else are you supposed to put things? But we also all know the impression we get when we walk through a well-maintained welcome area. You can achieve that level of sophistication too, and all it takes is a shoe rack and a tray for mail.
OK … the main rooms
This is where things start to get serious. Seating areas, kitchens, and bathrooms. That’s where you spend most of your time, and they are the main areas you can expect to make available to your guests. Forget the bedrooms, your garage, and your unsightly cupboards and spare rooms. You need to focus on your vanity rooms – the ones on display.
Step one is to make sure there is nothing on the floor, just laying around. Move it, bin it, or otherwise dispose of it. Next, scuff marks on skirting boards and any marked walls or wallpaper need to be reduced to a minimum. Stained upholstery? Rugs that ride up at the edges? Mismatched ornaments that have lingered far longer than their appeal? Start ticking them off.
Lastly… color-match everything
Pick a color scheme. Your TV stand that doesn’t match your sofa that doesn’t match your curtains that don’t match your lamp… sheesh. Start over if you have to. Bit by bit. Colour schemes work. Mismatched jumble is the enemy.
