Home Decor Sins That There’s No Atoning For

Home Decor Sins That There’s No Atoning For

Making a home yours, truly yours, means picking a decor that really reflects you. You can go so many different ways with it, from light and airy to rich and dramatic. Whatever you choose, it will take plenty of time and a lot of effort. What this means is that you will need to be sure of what you do before you do it. Coming back and looking at it again, it is all too easy to think you’ve made errors.

When you’ve made a mistake, it increases the time and effort you need to put in, and you can end up spending a lot just putting it right. It’s important to make sure it comes together completely. Having to go again, even just at part of it, can throw the whole thing off. So you have to plan the look right, and above all make sure the classy look you were going for doesn’t come off as tacky instead.

Busy Patterns: Going For Bold?

Much of modern decor is aimed at “statement” pieces or feature elements. Having pieces that stand out is important, as it means a room avoids sinking into the background. Even if the background is the room itself.

However, block colors are the way to do this. An overly complicated pattern anywhere, even on a cushion or a rug, draws the eye and distracts from the rest of the room. Magic eye pictures belong in a book. Your room should be cozy and bright, not like a fever dream.

Faux Fur: Good For Collars, Not For Homes

Actual fur is cruel to animals, and doesn’t make you look like a millionaire. Faux fur has its place and isn’t cruel, although it could be said to be unduly harsh on a room. A faux-fur throw, as well as being hard to say ten times fast, is hard to love anywhere in your house. It looks tacky and is also horrible to keep clean and new-looking. Just don’t even try.

Silk Sheets: Just No

Silk has been positioned as one of those rich fabrics, and it certainly has its place. But opulence is like ice-cream. It’s indulgent, but too much of it will make you feel sick. And if your bed sheets are made of it, they’ll look tacky.

You won’t be comfortable in bed, as you’ll feel like you’re constantly slipping. Go with something like a Vellux blanket – it wears better, feels good and doesn’t make your room look like a bad photoshoot. Have a silk pillowcase – silk is lovely in smaller doses and it’s also good for your facial skin. Bonus!

You can spend as much or as little as you like on decorating a room or a house. The result you’re aiming for is something that looks like it’s been thought out. Just throwing money at it and trying to make it look expensive is like trying to show how much money you can waste. It doesn’t achieve a “classy” look. It makes a statement, and that statement is “I went out of my way to spend money here”.
