Having The Holiday of a Lifetime on a Budget

04.19.2018 by Girl on Fire // Leave a Comment

When you hear the words holiday of a lifetime more often than not, you can begin to envisage it will cost a fortune. It is, however, possible to have a mind-blowing, unforgettable holiday without spending the GDP of a small country.

Nova Scotia, Canada is on the ‘to-do’ list of millions of UK residents, but for many, it seems to be a bit of a pipe dream. However, using some smart saving tips throughout the year can give you the funds for the initial travel costs.

But, what about when you’re there? Start with your hotel, book somewhere central, close to amenities but also close to as many free activities and beauty spots as possible. Delta Hotels Halifax has that covered, being both an excellent central location and very close to many places of note. One of the first things, and typically free unless you’re paying to access private gardens is – walking. Get a map, or download an app and plan some strolls around Halifax, the harbor has one of the longest boardwalks in the world – indeed worth some of your daily steps. While you’re in the mood to keep up the casual pace, go and check out the Historic Farmers’ Market – free to browse and soak up the culture and enjoy a typical Sunday morning in Halifax. The market is only open Sunday mornings, 7 am until 1 pm so pencil it in.

Holiday of a Lifetime

Get your skates on for free at the Emera Oval. Rollerblading is a favorite pastime in Halifax, but you can skip the blades and opt for bikes, scooters and toy cars. If you’d prefer to go ice skating, plan your holiday in the winter when the oval freezes over. You’ll then get free ice skating!

If Titanic is your favorite movie, then the Halifax Maritime Museum will be right up your street. Free entry on a Tuesday evening, you can check out some artifacts from the Titanic and read more about the recovery efforts untaken. The museum is Canada’s largest maritime museums and will readily absorb you for a few hours. Free and educational.

Traveling in the height of summer will give you access to the many free festivals that happen. Pick which one you like best and book for then, but remember that summer is peak time and you traveling costs will reflect that. A few of the most popular ones are:

  • Halifax Canada Day
  • Halifax Jazz Festival
  • Halifax Pride
  • Halifax International Busker Festival
  • Halifax Natal Day Festival

Just to name a few. Happen to be more of a movie buff? Then a monthly outdoor screening by Outdoor Film Experience in the Public Gardens is monthly. Note that the films are Canadian, so you’re more likely to find a new favorite than watch an old one.

One final place is the Library; it should be a point of pride to visit as many as possible in countries or locations that you visit. Why is this one special? On the top floor, it has a cafe… so you can grab a coffee and gasp in awe at the panoramic views.
