What You Should Always Consider Before Sending Your Child to High School

03.21.2018 by Girl on Fire // Leave a Comment

Once your child has left primary school, the next big step in their life is high school. Not only does it mark a big change in their life, but in yours, too, as you are watching them grow into being a young adult. Factors such as admittance policies and an evolving educational world mean that the choice for high schools if becoming more varied, which can be both a good and a bad thing when you don’t know where to start. Though there are many options available you can choose from, there are a few things you should always bear in mind before sending them to their next key stage.

Child to High School

How good their pastoral care is

A school’s focus should always be the level of education they can offer your child, which can enable them to do well in their exams and beyond. However, having such great teaching is sometimes rendered meaningless unless a school has a great support network to support your child as they grow. This can be as a helping hand to calm them during a stressful time, or to deal with any other emotional issues they may be going through as their hormones start to kick in. In any case, having good pastoral care will mean your child performs better in school.

The multicultural focus they have

As the world of education starts to grow, there has been a shift in how they incorporate multicultural learning into the classroom. This is mainly because the outside world is becoming more interconnected with people from across a range of countries. Having compulsory language classes prepares your child to enter such an environment, and also means they are exposed to a greater world of diversity. Sending them to somewhere renowned such as Southbank International School will let them build on these skills which will help them later in life.

The skills they offer kids for life

Learning languages isn’t the only life skill that a school should have on offer. Moreover, there are social and emotional skills that will benefit them as they grow into an adult. You want your child to turn out confident, which is something that makes or break in high school if they aren’t in the right environment. This is where it’s a good idea to go to as many open days as you can with your child, to see where they feel they could fit in the most and find themselves mingling with a supportive group of friends.

The range of extra-curricular activities

Health is extremely important for a person and their mental health; when your child is in their teen years, this is no exception. Cultivating a passion for being healthy, or a passion for a sport they love will help them grow in motivation. It will also help them process difficult emotions such as stress and anxiety, which are more likely to occur in teenage years. If a school is limited in which sporting options they offer, then it will be more of a struggle for your child to participate in healthy activities, so make sure you choose one that has a number of options. If they show such commitment, this will put them in good stead for when they apply to colleges or universities.
