Haiti, Part 2! It Ain’t Gonna be Pretty…

01.17.2010 by Girl on Fire // 14 Comments

So, it came to my attention that Obama has decided to give the estimated 100,000 to 200,000 Haitians here in the United States illegally, Temporary Protected Status.  This means that Haitians that were here before Jan. 12, 2010 will have legal status for 18 months.  That means they will be able to work and receive benefits.

Rewarded for breaking our laws. Dang, the local cops want to arrest me over a damn purse that I bought at Hot Topic, but people that sneak into our country and live illegally are protected.  I guess I need to break bigger laws to get something good handed to me.

Hey, I have a brilliant idea!  Why not send the estimated 100,000 to 200,o00 illegal Haitians back to Haiti so they can help rebuild? Oh, better yet, lets send them all of our illegal Mexicans as well!!!!  They are skilled in construction, they could teach the Haitians some of these skills as well while they help rebuild.  It’s a win win situation the way I see it…..

If one person calls me racist for saying this, then you are completely ignorant.  The facts are these people were and are here illegally.  If they want to be here they can go the same routes as every other legal resident that has come to live in the United States.

Talk about kicking people when they are down.  With all the unemployed people in our country our government chooses to give illegals the right to our non-existent jobs.  Nice.  Oh, and I happen to know of LEGAL people in this country that have immigrated and they totally agree with me!

You stole a purse at Hot Topic?? hehehe Sorry, I just couldn’t resist. And I agree that America is the land of opportunity for those that pursue legal options to be here.

As someone married to a Mexican and living in SoCal where there are nearly more illegal immigrants than legal ones, I totally agree with you. And so does my husband. When I saw that Spain was the European country giving the most in financial aid to Haiti at 4.3 million, I thought “oh that’s nice of them and all the other countries sending aid to Haiti.” THEN I saw that the U.S. is giving 100 MILLION and i nearly choked!!

Where the hell is Obama getting 100 million dollars? From his Obama Bucks Tree that is guarded by unicorns & griffins that only he can see?</sttrong We have how many FAMILIES that are homeless because of the damn liberals and the subprime loan fiasco, a 10% unemployment rate and he is giving 100 MILLION to another country??? Uh, how about taking 85% of that 100 million and using it to help our US citizens?

Or how about this? Exactly WHERE are these 100-200,000 illegal Haitian immigrants with temporary amnesty going to get a job when 10% of Americans can’t find one themselves?

I am not heartless or racist, but I don’t think that illegal immigrants should be allowed to circumvent the law. My Great Great Grandparents were treated with racism and outright hatred when they immigrated to the US from Ireland during the Potato Famine of the 1800’s. There were even laws against hiring or housing the Irish back then. They were called INNA laws…Irish Need Not Apply. Legalized discrimination right here in the good ole U.S. of A!

Do I feel for the Haitian people and the devastation that they have suffered? OF COURSE! It’s horrible. However, we still have cities that have not been rebuilt since Hurricane Katrina and the two that followed in pretty quick succession. Where is their government aid? And I’m not talking about New Orleans specifically, but places like Gulfport, MS and several other gulf towns that get no press.

I am not saying that we shouldn’t help other countries when they need it, what if we need that kind of help one day? Oh wait, we did…9/11. Who helped us then? Anyway, it’s ok to help other countries, but when our own citizens are suffering, shouldn’t we concentrate as much of our resources as possible on helping them first?

And no matter what country sends aid to Haiti, there will still be only two classes of people there…the ruling class who have everything and the regular citizens. This is the same country who actively condones their country’s children being taken by force to work across the border in the Dominican Republic as child slave labor in the sugar cane fields.

My husband has said this, and I think it may have some merit, “Isn’t it advantageous to our black president that the devastation in Haiti happened just before Martin Luther King Jr. Day? Now he can swoop in with huge amounts of money (coming straight from our pockets, by the way) and ingratiate himself to his people and thereby giving his gesture more meaning because it’s MLK Day.”

    Think about it.

Oh and Martin Luther King was a registered REPUBLICAN.

I’m quite certain that MLK Day has nothing to do with the Obama Administration’s desire to send aid. I highly doubt he was high-fiving people because of the incredible timing.

He’s not ingratiating himself with “his people”, he’s ingratiating himself with humanity. This isn’t about politics. It’s about the death, despair, and hopelessness that lies beneath the rubble of what was once Haiti.

        Greg,

Obama does NOTHING that isn’t somehow politically motivated or with an ulterior motive to further him or his cause du jour. he won’t make a move without the latest exit polls and a committee to dissect them.

Of course it’s just my opinion. But i do always call ’em like I see ’em. 🙂

While I don’t like the idea of people living in the USA illegally I don’t think it’s a good idea to send them back to Haiti right now. What Haiti needs is doctors. What I don’t get is why people migrate to our country. We are definitely an improvement from Mexico or Haiti or other poor countries but this isn’t the land of opportunity anymore. They should keep going north to Canada so they can have better healthcare and living conditions than we do.

I’m just curious about one thing….if all people were created equal (which I believe they are) why is it more important that people in America receive help from our government than people in Haiti?

I don’t believe their lives are any less valuable and worthy of assistance than the lives of my neighbors.

If an American child and a Haitian child walked up to me hungry and I had one piece of bread, I wouldn’t choose to give that bread to the American child simply because he/she was American, I’d split the bread in half and share. We all live in ONE world.

“why is it more important that people in America receive help from our government than people in Haiti?”

Because it is our government. Americans should be taken care of by their government first. Our tax dollars should help our country. If we were in a position to help that would be different. Shoot, our elders barely get social security.

We live in a generous country… at least by nature… we happen to be going through very tough economic times, but , most people would donate to proper charities if asked…

I just do not understand how granting 100 – 200, 000 illegal Haitians “temporary” status, (yea that will sure be temporary, what happens when it expires??? they go “poof” like a ‘pumkin carriage’?) and since jobs are no where to be found, they most likely would just go on the welfare or unemployment paid line. I also have many legal immigrant friend & relatives & they believe the same way.. come here legally , work, learn the language, contribute to society… not sneak in here and then gather all your friends & family over here & live off the countries charity or welfare???

Yes, we are close by, and have a large country & resources… but why does the world expect us to always foot the bill when it comes down to aide?? We have too many people, families, Children who need food, water, a roof over their heads right now here at home to spend aide $$ on… what happens when next week another disaster hits, which they always do, and it happens here??? Oops, sorry we ran out of aide $$, can you come back next year??

I am all for helping others… but this is more political than humanitarian. JMO…

I agree with your thinking Brandy, send the illegal Haitians & any other illegal status over there to work to rebuild… they can ‘earn credits’ for legal entrance into U. S. A. Sort of a Hand up, Help out to Get In….
    Good idea.

America has always assisted other nations in times of storms, mudslides, earthquakes, but I think with our own internal budget problems that future aid needs to be limited to what the American people can afford now, not pay for in later taxes. I do think our country can try to take in some of the Haitian orphans to be adopted by people already willing and financially able to do so in the USA.
As for the illegal aliens from Haiti and other countries, I don’t think our country was really hard at work getting any of these people back into their own countries to much of a degree anyways.
I do not feel they qualify for our food stamps and our free housing, or free health care as illegals.
If they can find jobs until they get caught and get deported, so be it. That just means that the people that hire them without green cards are the ones breaking the law and should be prosecuted according to our laws.
I just wish our law included this, that the people who hire illegals without green cards would be deported back to the country the illegal was from too.
We have laws to try and protect the stability of our country, I just wish they were enforced more.
I just wish Senator Kennedy wouldn’t have got the immigration bill passed when Reagan was in office where America has to let so many immigrants become citizens of the USA every year. I think that needs to be stopped until our own country can get back on it’s financial footing and have enough jobs for those who are already here. Enough is enough. These people need to work hard in their own country to make some positive changes for their own country and lives, instead of depending on the USA to do it for them.
I do believe some natural diaster like this could happen to the USA, and I don’t believe that other countries would be so willing to come to our aid in such a grand gesture with so much money.
This is the time for the people of Haiti to take over Haiti’s government and make it a government that will prepare for the future needs, education and employment of it’s people.
I heard that Sandra Bullock the actress (I don’t know for sure if it’s true), has pledged 1 million dollars to the diaster relief in Haiti. I think the Haitian people who have immigrated to this country should step up and pledge money too, especially the football players. If enough of them pledge enough money, then maybe Obama should use that money as the 100 million in aid from America, instead of saddeling the American’s with future taxes. He should instead save money like that in the event America is in need for it with natural diasters, like Tornado’s etc….
If I could I’d adopt an orphan from Haiti, but my husband feels he’s too old for more kids. I’ve talked to him in the past about adopting kids from here in the USA, but even then he said, “No.” So I have to respect his wishes since he’s the breadwinner in this family and because he is quite a bit older than I am. The ones I really feel for are the children. They weren’t living in the greatest conditions in the first place and then to see this happen.
I remember a mission trip we went on to Juarez, Mexico. We were helping to build homes for people living in actual cardboard shacks. Mostly women raising their children on their own, because their husbands had abandoned the family. They were living about 10 miles outside the town. Yet, in town their were some families living in great homes, as great as fancy ones here in the USA. Now, why weren’t the more priviledged families helping the poorer ones in their own country? That’s often the way it is in many countries. If their own people do nothing to help the ones in need in their own country, then why do they expect America to always come in to the rescue. I often think they really could care less if America can in to help their poor, as long as the well to do in those countries needs are met by the aid. I just wish they valued everyone lives as much as America values all it’s citizens lives, but who knows times may show that is not truly the case anymore here in America either.

I am far from heartless. I just don’t like the fact that our government chooses to send tax dollars to another country when plenty are suffering here.
